There was always going to be pressure on Criminal Minds: Evolution when the series returned. The original Criminal Minds spent years becoming one of television’s biggest crime dramas, and fans were protective of the BAU long before the Paramount+ revival was announced.
So far, though, the reboot has managed to pull something difficult off. It brought familiar characters back into the spotlight without making the new series feel stuck in the past.
Now the show is coming back for another season, and this time the BAU is dealing with a threat tied directly to Elias Voit’s growing notoriety.

Season 19 premieres May 28 on Paramount+, opening with a two episode launch before continuing weekly through July 23.
The new season picks up with the BAU once again facing the fallout connected to Elias Voit. Last season turned Voit into one of the reboot’s most talked about villains, mainly because the character never felt predictable. Even when viewers thought they understood him, the story kept shifting.
That lingering impact becomes a major problem this season.
According to Paramount+, a new UnSub known only as “The Fan” begins targeting people while trying to prove he is more dangerous than Voit himself. The obsession creates a strange dynamic for the BAU because they are not simply hunting another killer. They are dealing with someone consumed by another criminal’s reputation.
That idea feels very much in line with what Criminal Minds has always done best.
The series was never only about solving cases. What kept audiences invested for so many years was the psychological side of the investigations and how those cases affected the profilers personally.
Why the ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival Has Lasted
When many older shows return, the biggest challenge is figuring out whether the audience still wants the same thing years later. In the case of Criminal Minds: Evolution, the answer seems pretty clear.
Fans still wanted the BAU.
The reboot succeeded because it understood what viewers connected to in the original series. The chemistry between the agents mattered just as much as the weekly investigations. Bringing those characters back instantly gave the revival emotional weight.
At the same time, the streaming format helped the series evolve a little.
The newer version of Criminal Minds spends more time following larger season long stories instead of wrapping everything up neatly in a single episode. That change has allowed the series to feel darker at times while giving characters more room to breathe.
It also helps that crime dramas still perform extremely well on streaming services. Even years after the original CBS run ended, Criminal Minds continued finding viewers online, which kept the franchise alive long enough for Paramount+ to revisit it.
The ‘Evolution’ Cast Returns
Season 19 once again features several returning cast members, including Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Zach Gilford, and RJ Hatanaka.
Returning stars Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster are also back for the new season.
Behind the camera, Erica Messer continues serving as showrunner and executive producer. Messer has been part of the Criminal Minds universe for years and remains one of the franchise’s key creative voices.
The new season will also feature several guest stars, including Justin Kirk, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jeri Ryan, Clark Gregg, Cress Williams, Kofi Siriboe, Dash Mihok, and Nicholas Gonzalez.
That guest lineup should add even more unpredictability to the season as the BAU works through another dangerous case.
‘Criminal Minds’ Still Knows How To Build Suspense
Part of what kept Criminal Minds running for as long as it did was a genuine mastery of suspense. The show was never interested in cheap thrills or last minute shock twists. It built its tension the slow way, through profiling, through emotional stakes, and through one of the most unsettling ideas in crime fiction: that the most dangerous people in the world can look completely unremarkable.
That formula still connects with audiences.
The success of Criminal Minds: Evolution proves there is still a strong appetite for smart procedural dramas built around psychology and character relationships. The reboot has found a way to respect the original series while still moving the story forward.
Now the BAU has another dangerous obsession to confront.
