After celebrating 50 seasons with some very familiar faces, Survivor is going back to where the fun really begins: a group of complete strangers landing on a beach and trying to figure each other out.
CBS has officially revealed the cast for Survivor 51, and while we are not going to run through all 21 names here, the bigger news may be what is waiting for them once the game begins. The new season launches what the show is calling its “Open Era,” and that could make life considerably more complicated for anybody who thinks they already know how to play Survivor.
The new season premieres September 23 with a special two-hour episode, and after everything Survivor 50 gave fans, this certainly doesn’t feel like the show is planning to slow down.
Survivor 51 starts a new chapter after a huge milestone season
Season 50 was always going to be a tough act to follow. Survivor turned its landmark season into a celebration of the show’s history, bringing back players from the past and giving fans a role in some of the decisions that shaped the game.
It was big, nostalgic and designed to feel like an event.
Now Survivor 51 gets to do almost the opposite.
Instead of relying on players viewers already know, the show is starting fresh with 21 new castaways. They come from completely different backgrounds and professions, but none of them has played this game before. That means all of the alliances, rivalries, questionable decisions and inevitable Tribal Council disasters get to develop from scratch.
And apparently, the producers have no intention of making things comfortable for them.
Welcome to the Open Era of Survivor
The most interesting part of the announcement is the introduction of the show’s new Open Era.
According to CBS, every twist, idol and advantage from throughout Survivor history can now potentially return. There apparently isn’t going to be a neat little rulebook telling players which era of the game they should prepare for, either. Something that disappeared years ago could suddenly matter again, and advantages could show up in an order nobody expects.
For longtime fans, that opens up a pretty entertaining box of possibilities.
It also creates a different problem for the castaways. Modern Survivor players tend to arrive knowing the game extremely well. They have watched previous seasons, studied strategies and spent years imagining what they would do if Jeff Probst ever told them to come on in.
Knowing Survivor history may still help. Assuming that history tells you what happens next could be a much bigger mistake.
That sounds like exactly the kind of chaos we want.
Meet the new Survivor 51 castaways
CBS has released the first look at the 21 people who will be trying to outwit, outplay and outlast one another this season. The group includes people working in everything from medicine and law to farming, professional wrestling, entertainment and game design.
More importantly, they are about to discover that whatever plans they made before getting to Fiji probably won’t survive first contact with the actual game.
When does Survivor 51 premiere?
Survivor 51 premieres Wednesday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS with a special two-hour episode. The season will also stream on Paramount+.
Beginning September 30, the show settles into its regular 90-minute Wednesday episodes at 8 p.m.
Twenty-six years after Survivor first put a group of strangers on an island, the basic idea remains wonderfully simple: build relationships, win when you have to, know when people are lying to you and make sure Jeff Probst isn’t snuffing your torch.
Everything surrounding that idea, however, is apparently fair game again.
After Season 50 celebrated where Survivor has been, Season 51 looks ready to start making a whole new mess of things.
We are more than ready.
