NeNe Leakes returns to the Housewives world in the latest episode of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, delivering one of the most anticipated moments of the season during the cast’s stop in Atlanta.
The former Real Housewives of Atlanta star made her long-awaited RHUGT return during the Atlanta portion of the trip, and Bravo didn’t exactly sneak her through the side door. NeNe Leakes received the kind of entrance you would expect for somebody whose name is permanently attached to Housewives history.
And somehow, her return wasn’t even the only thing happening.
There was a drag brunch, an Alter Ego Party packed with familiar faces, Gizelle Bryant happily collecting everybody’s business and more trouble brewing between Lisa Barlow and her Real Housewives of Salt Lake City castmates.
In other words, Atlanta delivered.
NeNe Leakes returns to RHUGT
Before the night’s big Alter Ego Party, the women joined Phaedra Parks for a drag brunch featuring performers impersonating members of the group.
The brunch gave everybody a chance to have some fun before the drama started, including Teresa Giudice, who got another opportunity to laugh about just how far her famous “prostitution whore” line has traveled through pop culture. But the biggest moment was still ahead, as the long-awaited NeNe Leakes RHUGT return was about to become official.
Then came the real surprise.
NeNe Leakes returns during the show, immediately sending the room into celebration mode.
Kyle Richards jumped up to greet her, while the rest of the women welcomed NeNe Leakes like somebody returning to a very unusual family reunion. The NeNe Leakes comeback quickly became one of the biggest moments of the Atlanta trip.
For longtime Bravo viewers, it was hard not to appreciate the moment. Whatever happened between NeNe Leakes and the network over the years, there is no denying the enormous role she played in turning The Real Housewives of Atlanta into one of Bravo’s signature shows.
Seeing her surrounded by Housewives again simply felt right, and the NeNe Leakes Bravo return gave longtime fans the reunion they had been waiting for.
NeNe Leakes returns and opens up about life after RHOA
Once everybody settled down, NeNe Leakes talked about what it was like watching the franchise continue after she left. Her NeNe Leakes Bravo comeback also gave her a chance to reflect on everything that had changed while she was away.
It’s something several women on this trip understand better than almost anybody else.
Leaving a show that has been a huge part of your life can apparently bring two very different emotions at the same time. NeNe Leakes admitted there were moments when she felt left out watching everything move forward without her, but she also found some peace away from it. That made the NeNe Leakes Housewives return feel even more meaningful.
Those conversations have quietly become one of the best things about The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.
Yes, viewers get the callbacks, old clips and famous quotes, but these women also share an experience very few people understand. They became reality television stars, watched their personal lives become storylines and, in many cases, experienced life both inside and outside the Bravo universe.
Then Gizelle Bryant decided everybody had been getting along long enough.
Gizelle Bryant wastes no time stirring things up
Gizelle Bryant brought up something NeNe Leakes had previously said during an encounter with Gizelle Bryant’s Real Housewives of Potomac castmate Karen Huger.
According to Gizelle Bryant, NeNe Leakes had jokingly encouraged Karen Huger to beat her up.
That sounds like exactly the kind of conversation that could turn into a full Housewives explosion, especially when you’re bringing it up directly to NeNe Leakes.
Instead, something shocking happened.
NeNe Leakes apologized.
She explained that alcohol and trash talking were involved, made it clear there were no hard feelings and the two quickly moved past it.
Crisis avoided.
For approximately five minutes.
Because Gizelle Bryant still had an entire party full of Housewives to interrogate.
The RHUGT Alter Ego Party brings out everybody
The Alter Ego Party itself was a callback to an early Real Housewives of Atlanta event in which the women embraced exaggerated alter egos for a photoshoot. With the NeNe Leakes RHUGT return already giving the Atlanta trip a major moment, the party brought even more familiar Housewives energy.
This time, it essentially became one giant costume party.
Gizelle Bryant transformed into Diana Ross, while Porsha Williams went with a Stepford Wife look.
Lisa Barlow and Kyle Richards both arrived as cowgirls, Vicki Gunvalson attempted a Jackie Kennedy Onassis look and Heather Gay channeled Britney Spears.
Angie Katsanevas became Cher, while Mary Cosby went with Wonder Woman.
The guest list also included Candiace Dillard-Bassett, Drew Sidora, Stacey Rusch and Ashley Darby, giving Gizelle Bryant plenty of people to question. Between the costumes, returning Housewives and the NeNe Leakes Bravo comeback, Atlanta was quickly becoming one of the biggest stops of the trip.
And question them she did.
Kyle Richards clears the air with Ashley Darby
There was still some unfinished business surrounding Mauricio Umansky.
Earlier in the trip, Kyle Richards wasn’t thrilled with the attention her estranged husband received from some of the other Housewives.
Ashley Darby eventually approached Kyle Richards and attempted to explain what happened.
Kyle Richards reminded her that she and Mauricio Umansky are still legally married, despite their separation and the changes both have made in their personal lives.
Ashley Darby made it clear she understood why Kyle Richards might be uncomfortable with another Housewife becoming involved with her former partner, and the two were able to move forward without turning the conversation into another major fight.
Then Gizelle Bryant turned her attention toward Salt Lake City.
Gizelle Bryant investigates Lisa Barlow’s RHOSLC drama
If Bravo ever decides Gizelle Bryant needs another job, investigative reporter might work.
With Heather Gay, Angie Katsanevas and Mary Cosby all attending the party, Gizelle Bryant wanted answers about Lisa Barlow’s strained relationship with her Real Housewives of Salt Lake City castmates.
The problem is that explaining years of Salt Lake City drama in a few minutes is practically impossible.
Heather Gay tried anyway.
Rather than unpack every argument and alliance from six seasons, Heather Gay explained that there is enough history between the women that she doesn’t always feel comfortable completely trusting Lisa Barlow.
That explanation didn’t appear likely to change many minds.
The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip cast has grown incredibly protective of Lisa Barlow during this season, particularly after seeing how emotional she has become about her situation back home.
NeNe Leakes RHUGT return comes with Lisa Barlow and Heather Gay drama
Lisa Barlow has seemed noticeably happier around the Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip group than she does when discussing her own cast, and that contrast became even more obvious in Atlanta.
She admitted she was exhausted and worried she wasn’t bringing enough energy to the trip.
Vicki Gunvalson actually gave her some reassuring advice, reminding Lisa Barlow that nobody can perform for the cameras every second of every day.
Unfortunately, the peaceful mood didn’t last.
Heather Gay eventually approached Lisa Barlow at the Alter Ego Party and initially seemed interested in keeping things friendly.
Then came a joke about Lisa Barlow’s history with costumes.
Lisa Barlow didn’t appreciate it.
The conversation quickly started deteriorating, giving everyone another reminder that whatever is happening between the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City women isn’t disappearing simply because they’ve temporarily joined another Housewives universe.
With NeNe Leakes finally back, Gizelle Bryant collecting information from anybody willing to talk and the Salt Lake City feud threatening to follow Lisa Barlow wherever she goes, Atlanta may have started as a celebration.
It definitely didn’t stay that way.
For fans who have been waiting for a NeNe Leakes Bravo comeback, the Atlanta episode delivered the moment they wanted. NeNe Leakes returns to a familiar setting, reconnects with the Housewives and quickly reminds everyone why her presence still means so much to the franchise.
