Avengers Assemble Again, and Marvel is giving fans a pretty good reason to make another trip to the theater.
Tickets are now on sale for Avengers: Endgame Encore, which brings the 2019 blockbuster back to the big screen beginning September 25. The return includes IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screenings, along with something fans definitely didn’t get the first time around: an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. Audiences seeing the Encore presentation in IMAX and Infinity Vision will also get an additional sneak peek at the upcoming Avengers movie.
That makes this more than a simple anniversary trip back to 2019.
Avengers Assemble Again for one of Marvel’s biggest movies
Seven years later, Avengers: Endgame still feels different from most superhero movies that came before or after it. A lot of that has to do with how much history was riding on those three hours. Marvel had spent more than a decade introducing characters, building relationships and connecting movies together before finally reaching the end of the Infinity Saga.
And then Avengers: Infinity War left everybody hanging.
Thanos won. Half of all life disappeared. Some of Marvel’s most popular characters were suddenly gone, and audiences had an entire year to wonder how the Avengers could possibly fix any of it.
Endgame had an enormous amount to live up to, but it gave fans the kind of payoff they had been waiting for. Captain America finally picked up Mjolnir. Heroes from across the MCU returned through those portals. And after years of hearing variations of the phrase, the Avengers finally assembled for one enormous battle.
Those moments were made to get a reaction.
The quieter ones are probably why the movie has lasted.
Tony Stark’s story came to an end. Steve Rogers finally got something resembling the life he had missed. Natasha Romanoff made a sacrifice that couldn’t simply be reversed a few scenes later. Audiences had spent years with these characters, so when Endgame asked them to say goodbye, there was real history behind it.
That’s a big reason the movie is still regarded as one of the great superhero sequels and one of the defining comic book movies of its era. The action was massive, but the emotional payoff was just as important.
Endgame was made for a theater full of people
Anyone who caught Avengers: Endgame during its original run probably remembers more than what happened on the screen.
You remember the room.
The reaction when Captain America caught the hammer. The noise when the portals started opening. The laughs, the cheers and, by the end, plenty of people trying not to cry.
That atmosphere became part of the movie.
Watching Endgame at home is still fun, but it isn’t quite the same as seeing those moments with hundreds of people reacting at once. That’s what makes this particular theatrical return appealing, especially for younger Marvel fans who never had the chance to see it that way in 2019.
Avengers: Endgame Encore will play in IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified Premium Large Format theaters, putting the movie back on the kind of screens where its biggest moments were meant to land.
Avengers: Doomsday looks ahead
Marvel is also making sure the Encore run isn’t only about looking back.
Every Avengers: Endgame Encore screening will include an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. Fans seeing the movie in IMAX or Infinity Vision-certified theaters will get an additional sneak peek.
It’s an interesting pairing. Endgame brought one enormous era of Marvel storytelling to a close, while Doomsday is preparing to put the Avengers back at the center of another major MCU event.
That’s a pretty high standard to follow.
But if Marvel wants to remind people why an Avengers movie once felt like an event you had to see with a crowd, bringing Endgame back to theaters is a good place to start.
