The actor reprises Maui in Disney’s live-action Moana, opening in theaters July 10. But he’s not just lending his voice to an animated demigod anymore. He’s stepping into Maui’s world in the flesh, playing the character on camera. And yes, he’s taking another swing at the song fans have belted out for nearly a decade.

Johnson has never treated Maui like just another franchise gig. The role hits close to home for him. It lets him celebrate a culture he holds dear, then share it with audiences around the world.
You can hear that in his excitement for the live-action film. Animation gave Maui a massive, expressive presence and a body covered in living tattoos. Live action pulls the character in closer. Still, Maui might be the role that defines that legacy best. He’s loud, funny and endlessly quotable. He also carries real emotion, and that’s why the character has outlasted a single movie.
So hearing “You’re Welcome” again isn’t just a nostalgia play. Johnson isn’t revisiting Maui simply because audiences remember the song. He’s back because the character still has room to grow. And the live-action Moana hands him a brand new way to put that journey on screen.
