Elle Woods is heading back to the 1990s, and she’s bringing her whole origin story with her. The Legally Blonde prequel everyone has been waiting for is finally here.
Prime Video has dropped the first official trailer for Elle, the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series that turns the clock all the way back to before Harvard, before the pink suits, and before anyone knew her name. The Elle Woods origin story gets a full coming-of-age treatment here, set in 1995 and following a teenage Elle through the kind of high school experiences that quietly shaped one of pop culture’s most beloved characters.
All eight episodes land on July 1, and Prime Video has already renewed Elle for a second season before the first one has even aired. That’s a statement.
The Legally Blonde Prequel Puts a Younger Elle Woods in the Spotlight
The Legally Blonde series has always been about a woman who refuses to be underestimated. Elle goes back to figure out where that started.
Set against the backdrop of mid-90s high school life, the Elle TV series explores the messier, less polished version of a character fans already love. Complicated friendships, first love, the kind of awkward growing pains that nobody gets through cleanly. The trailer teases all of it, while also showing the family support and quiet moments of self-discovery that eventually add up to the confident, determined woman Elle Woods becomes.
For longtime fans of the Legally Blonde franchise this is genuinely new territory. Nobody has seen this side of her before.
A New Cast Brings Familiar Characters to Life
Lexi Minetree leads the series as the young Elle Woods, and she’s got a strong ensemble around her.
June Diane Raphael plays Elle‘s mother Eva, with Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt. The cast also includes Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz, with recurring guest stars James Van Der Beek, David Burtka, Lisa Yamada, Logan Shroyer, Jessica Belkin, and Sharon Taylor rounding out the lineup.
Behind the camera, the Elle Prime Video series was created by Laura Kittrell, whose previous credits include High School and Insecure. Kittrell serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries. And Reese Witherspoon, the actress whose portrayal of Elle Woods made the character a cultural institution in the first place, is on board as an executive producer.

The first trailer gives the best look yet at the tone the show is going for: comedy, heart, romance, and a heavy dose of 90s nostalgia that should hit differently for anyone who grew up in that era.
