Even though the plot of Zootopia 2 picks up just one week after the events of the original film, the long awaited sequel marks a return to Zootopia nearly nine years after Zootopia first hit theaters. When that much time passes between films, reuniting the original cast can sometimes be challenging. In this case, however, the producers had no trouble convincing key voices to return.

A return to Zootopia brings the original cast back for Zootopia 2

Producers successfully brought back Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, and several other original cast members for the sequel. Bateman once again voices the clever and quick witted fox Nick Wilde, reuniting with Goodwin’s optimistic rabbit cop Judy Hopps.

Bateman recently spoke with us about returning for Zootopia 2, and he made it clear the decision was an easy one. According to the actor, there was no complicated pitch or lengthy discussion involved. All the producers had to do was ask.

Why a return to Zootopia was worth the wait

Released in 2016, Zootopia became both a critical and commercial success. The animated film earned widespread praise for its humor, inventive world building, and thoughtful themes, eventually winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

With Zootopia 2, the creative team faced the challenge of honoring what made the first film so beloved while still delivering a fresh story. By setting the sequel just days after the original, the film is able to continue character arcs naturally while expanding the world audiences already know.

A familiar voice leads a new chapter

Bateman’s return as Nick Wilde brings immediate continuity to the sequel. His dynamic with Goodwin remains central to the heart of the franchise, balancing humor with emotional depth.

Now playing exclusively in theaters, Zootopia 2 welcomes audiences back to its vibrant animated world, proving that even after nearly a decade, the right story can make the wait worthwhile.
