For anyone who recalls the stunning influence of 28 Days Later, which historically captured a deserted London, the premise of 28 Years Later revisits a world still forever marked by the terror of the rage virus. However, it envisions that world almost three decades post-virus, hinting at evolved horrors and new challenges. A draconian quarantine might still be in place, but it suggests that a handful of surviving humans has been eking out a life beyond the quarantine, establishing a rough-and-tumble semblance of civility.

The official word suggests a fresh plot development in this devastated world. The tale, we’re told, centers on a band of survivors eking out a living on a tiny island. Their only tie to the mainland is a fortified causeway guarded by men, stretching straight across the water. But when one of their number dares to venture into the darkness of the mainland, we’re set to discover right along with her the dark secrets and twisted horrors that have transformed not just the infected but also the surviving human population.

The Academy Award winning director behind Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle, and the Academy Award nominated writer of Ex Machina and Annihilation,Alex Garland, are creative forces to reckon with. They are both eminently capable of eliciting true, visceral audience reactions. When you juxtapose the kind of storytelling that provokes real thought and instills a deep sense of unease, it’s a mix that promises something truly potent and thrilling. All signs point to their joint collaboration on this ambitious project amounting to a resurgence for the horror genre.
