While most of the eulogies for the late Jim Abrahams have rightfully centered around Airplane!, the movie that catapulted him and the Zucker brothers into the public consciousness, it would be negligent to ignore some of the other films he made. Just as Airplane! skewered disaster movies, Hot Shots took aim at the success of Top Gun and other iconic ’80s films. Continuing with his practice of casting against type, Charlie Sheen — who was primarily known for his dramatic roles at that point — was brought in as the film’s lead. When the film was originally released, Sheen talked to us about Abrahams gave him the confidence to feel like he could be an on-screen comedian (a skill that would later serve him well on Two and a Half Men).
