The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially happening, and Mario isn’t done with the big screen yet. Not even close.
After The Super Mario Bros. Movie crushed it in 2023, raking in over a billion dollars globally, Nintendo and Illumination are sending the plumber back to theaters for this animated sequel. This time they’re pulling from one of the franchise’s most beloved games, and based on that title alone, you can probably guess where the Mario space adventure is headed.
The Super Mario Galaxy Sequel Takes Mario to Space
Space. That’s the whole pitch for this Nintendo Illumination movie.
The first Mario film stuck pretty close to familiar territory, but this Galaxy follow-up is pulling straight from the Wii classic, which means we’re getting planets, gravity mechanics, and all that cosmic weirdness. Plot details for the new Mario movie haven’t been revealed yet, but honestly, if you played those games you already know the kind of territory they’re working with. My main worry? They better not screw up the Luma stuff, because that storyline in the original game was way more emotional than anyone expected from a Mario title.
The box office haul from The Super Mario Bros. Movie was massive. Over $1.3 billion. Those aren’t normal numbers for a video game adaptation. Illumination clearly wants to keep that momentum going with this Mario Galaxy sequel by doing something different instead of just repeating what worked before.
Mario Movie Sequel Brings Back the Voice Cast (Plus Some New Faces)
Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black are returning as Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Bowser for the Super Mario Galaxy follow-up. Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson round out the returning cast.
The trailers for this next Mario movie showed off two new additions: Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Both choices make sense given the Galaxy setting, and Larson especially seems like solid casting for Rosalina’s character in this Mario outer space adventure.
Why The Mario Space Adventure Could Be Huge
April 1. That’s when this thing drops.
It’s positioned to be one of spring’s biggest releases, and if Illumination actually captures what made the Galaxy games special – that mix of playful creativity and unexpected depth – this could be something worth getting excited about. Then again, video game movies are always a gamble, even when the first one succeeds.
Mario in space. Strange sentence to type. But here we are.
