A legendary moment in music history is returning to the spotlight. The HBO Original documentary One to One: John & Yoko, directed by Academy Award® winner Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September), will debut Friday, November 14 (8:00–9:45 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.
The film earned critical acclaim at major festivals including Venice, Telluride, and Sundance. It offers a rare, intimate look at a pivotal period in the lives of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
A Transformative Year in New York City for John & Yoko
Set in the early 1970s, the film immerses viewers in the couple’s first year in New York City. They had just arrived from the U.K. and moved into a small Greenwich Village apartment. There, they absorbed American culture through television. They watched everything from the Vietnam War to game shows and Coca-Cola commercials.
As their world expanded, their activism grew too. Inspired by journalist Geraldo Rivera’s exposé on the Willowbrook State School, John and Yoko organized the “One to One” benefit concert. It became a powerful example of how they turned their art into action.
The Iconic Madison Square Garden Performance
On August 30, 1972, John Lennon took the stage at Madison Square Garden for his only full-length concert after leaving The Beatles. Backed by Elephant’s Memory and joined by Yoko Ono, the performance became a cultural flashpoint.
That electrifying concert footage has been painstakingly restored for this documentary and woven together with never-before-seen material to give audiences an unprecedented front-row seat to history.
A Bold New Lens on Lennon and Ono
Featuring newly remixed music produced by Sean Ono Lennon, One to One: John & Yoko uses that Madison Square Garden performance as a springboard to explore 18 defining months in the couple’s lives.
Filmed in a meticulously recreated version of their New York apartment, the documentary paints a vivid portrait of love, transformation, creativity, and protest. More than fifty years later, their message and music still echo powerfully today.
