Ever since the release of 1992’s El Mariachi, Robert Rodriguez has been pushing the envelope of cinema, influencing a whole new generation of filmmakers in the process. His do it yourself style of filmmaking predated the YouTube generation, and no matter how big (Sin City and Spy Kids films) his movies gets, Rodriguez continues to stick to that aesthetic.
That style is put to the test, as Robert Rodriguez is armed with a $170 million budget and producer James Cameron as a collaborator in Alita: Battle Angel. Based on manga series by Yukito Kishiro, the story centers on a cyborg (Rosa Salazar as the titular character) who has no memory of her past. When a doctor named Ido (Christoph Waltz) comes to her aid, Alita gradually pieces back her memory and realizes she has an immeasurable level of power.
