Eventually kids grow up, and Diary of a Wimpy: The Long Haul spoke to those changes by casting Jason Drucker as Greg (he replaces Zachary Gordon) and Charlie Wright as Greg’s wannabe rocker sibling Rodrick (he takes over for Devon Bostick) in the lead roles. Another big change comes with the roles of the kids’ parents, as Tom Everett Scott (La La Land) and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) are now part of the franchise, taking over for Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris.
There are two important factors that remain constant, as David Bowers returns as the director (he helmed the previous two installments) and author Jeff Kinney actually co-penned The Long Haul screenplay with Bowers. This time out the family road trip to see Meemaw takes a bit of a detour as Greg actually schemes to attend a gaming convention. Like most of Greg’s plans, this operation doesn’t go smoothly!
