NBC is bringing a new family drama to its fall lineup, although this family has a little more than the usual dinner-table tension to worry about. The new Line of Fire trailer introduces a family whose members work across some of the biggest federal law enforcement agencies in the country. That means disagreements don’t necessarily stay at home. When everyone has a badge, a different responsibility and their own idea of how a case should be handled, family loyalty can get complicated pretty quickly.

Peter Krause leads the cast of the new NBC drama, and the first official trailer gives viewers a much better idea of what Line of Fire will look like when it arrives in September.

The Line of Fire trailer puts family and duty on a collision course

The central idea behind Line of Fire is pretty simple, but it opens the door to plenty of conflict.

Members of the same family work for different parts of the federal government, including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service and Department of Justice. They may all be involved in law enforcement, but that doesn’t mean they’re always working toward a solution in exactly the same way.

Those differences become much more important when what looks like a straightforward case begins turning into something much bigger.

A deadly conspiracy eventually puts the family directly in danger, forcing them to rely on one another while also dealing with the rules and responsibilities that come with their jobs.

That’s where the new Line of Fire NBC drama seems to be separating itself from a more traditional procedural.

There will obviously be investigations and plenty of law-enforcement action, but the family relationships appear to be just as important as whatever case they’re trying to solve.

Peter Krause & Hope Davis lead the cast

The Line of Fire cast gives NBC an ensemble with plenty of familiar faces.

Peter Krause stars alongside Hope Davis, Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien, Taylor Bloom and Charlie Barnett.

For Krause, the series also marks another major television role after years of memorable work on shows including Six Feet Under, Parenthood and 9-1-1.

This time, though, he’s stepping into a story where the professional stakes and personal stakes are constantly overlapping.

The family at the center of Line of Fire isn’t simply dealing with different personalities. Their jobs can place them on opposite sides of the same situation, and the trailer makes it clear those conflicts aren’t going to disappear just because they’re related.

When a case starts threatening the people closest to them, following procedure may suddenly become much harder.

Line of Fire could be more than another NBC procedural

NBC has certainly had plenty of success with dramas built around police officers, firefighters, doctors and federal agents. With Line of Fire, the network is adding another law-enforcement series to that mix, but the family element gives the show a slightly different hook.

Instead of one team working under the same rules, these characters come from several different agencies.

That matters.

The FBI may approach a situation one way while the Secret Service or U.S. Marshals have completely different responsibilities. Put relatives inside those agencies and suddenly a professional disagreement can become personal very quickly.

The larger conspiracy also raises the stakes beyond a routine investigation.

NBC says the family could eventually be forced to choose between honoring the codes they’ve sworn to follow and protecting one another. That creates a much more interesting question than simply figuring out who committed a crime.

What happens when doing your job could put someone you love in danger?

And what happens when protecting your family means crossing a line you were never supposed to cross?

Those questions look like they’ll be at the heart of Line of Fire.
