Things were already complicated enough for Kate Wyler. Apparently, The Diplomat decided that was not nearly enough. Netflix has released the first The Diplomat Season 4 teaser, and the political drama is heading straight back into dangerous territory when it returns this fall. This time, though, the biggest threats are not coming only from governments, weapons or an international crisis. The people closest to Kate may create just as much trouble as anything happening overseas, especially as two marriages begin colliding with the political decisions coming out of the White House.
Keri Russell returns as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler alongside Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn. Based on what Netflix has revealed about The Diplomat Season 4, those four characters are about to become tangled together in ways that could create problems both at home and abroad.
The Diplomat Season 4 puts Kate Wyler back in crisis mode
Season 4 picks up after a catastrophic event destroys the fragile peace Kate managed to establish between the United States and United Kingdom. At the same time, her already troubled marriage to Hal faces even more pressure. That alone would be enough to keep most people busy, but Kate rarely gets the luxury of dealing with only one crisis at a time.
President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler now find themselves at the center of a conspiracy involving an attempt to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon, a move that could push the United States dangerously close to war. As Kate tries to keep the international situation from getting even worse, circumstances push her into an unexpected partnership with Todd Penn. Kate and Todd have never exactly looked like a natural team, but the growing bond between Grace and Hal suddenly gives them a reason to work together.
Two marriages turn into one political mess
Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum that the fourth season is built heavily around Kate, Hal, Grace and Todd, particularly what happens when their public responsibilities begin wrecking their ability to function normally in their private lives. That sounds pretty much perfect for The Diplomat, a series that has always been just as interested in the chaos inside Kate’s marriage as it is in the international problems waiting outside her door.
According to Cahn, the shifting relationships are a major part of the new season. Grace and Hal develop a stronger connection while Kate and Todd are pushed into an alliance of their own, creating a situation where the usual partnerships start to change. That does not necessarily mean either new pairing is going to work especially well, and that may be exactly what makes The Diplomat Season 4 so interesting. Kate has spent years trying to keep her professional and personal worlds from completely crashing into one another. Now they appear ready to collide head on.
The Diplomat Season 4 cast brings back some familiar faces
The The Diplomat Season 4 cast once again puts four Emmy nominees at the center of the story, with Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford all returning. Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah are also back as the Netflix series heads into another season of political maneuvering, complicated relationships and decisions that could have consequences far beyond Washington.
Because stopping an international disaster is difficult enough. Trying to do it while your marriage is falling apart and your husband is developing a powerful new alliance with the president is something else entirely. That is very The Diplomat.
