Thirty Years Later, Winona Ryder Remembers Her First ‘Beetlejuice’ Encounter

With the classic comedy Beetlejuice having just turned 30 years old (it opened on March 30, 1988), there is talk about bringing the character back for a sequel, and a Beetlejuice Broadway musical is in the works, too. It still ranks as one of director Tim Burton’s signature movies, with its over-the-top comedy and manic energy. Winona Ryder, who starred in the movie alongside Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin, knew she was in for a different kind of moviemaking experience from the very moment she met Burton. For Composer Danny Elfman ‘Nightmare’ Was A Dream Come True

dannyelfmanConsidered by many to be a contemporary holiday classic, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is a beautifully mounted stop-motion animated musical telling the story of how Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town, discovers (and then comes to understand the concept behind) Christmas Town.

Created by TIM BURTON, the film is a stylish combination of the beautiful and the bizarre directed by HENRY SELICK and featuring the voice talents of CHRIS SARANDON, CATHERINE O’HARA, WILLIAM HICKEY, GREG PROOPS and PAUL REUBENS. With music and lyrics by longtime BURTON collaborator DANNY ELFMAN (who also provided the singing voice of Jack Skellington), the movie has all the elements of a perennial favorite.

We caught up with ELFMAN recently on the red carpet at Disney’s D23 Expo and he talked about the original response to the film and how NIGHTMARE became the biggest surprise of his career.

TIM BURTON’S NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS is available on DVD, BLU-RAY and Digital HD.

Winona Ryder Recalls First Meet-Up With ‘Beetlejuice’ Director Tim Burton

bw-winona-ryderAfter Monday night’s appearance on LATE NIGHT, actress WINONA RYDER managed to get the interwebs all excited by confirming to host SETH MEYERS that, after years of speculation, a sequel to the 1988 classic comedy BEETLEJUICE is a definite happening.

Directed by TIM BURTON and starring MICHAEL KEATON, GEENA DAVIS, ALEC BALDWIN, CATHERINE O’HARA, JEFFREY JONES and RYDER (in her first of many BURTON collabs),

BEETLEJUICE was an instant classic and even bagged an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

While RYDER didn’t have a whole lot of news to share about the upcoming production, her announcement reminded us that a couple of years ago we talked to her about the rumors of a BEETLEJUICE reunion and she reminisced about her first meeting with TIM BURTON when auditioning for the film. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

The original BEETLEJUICE is available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
