New To Blu: A Thrilling Series Comes To Life In ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’

gwdt-bluray-coverAvailable this week on DVD and Blu-ray, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is the first in a trilogy known as THE MILLENNIUM SERIES (the other two titles are THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST) by Swedish author STIEG LARSSON.  At the core of these stories are investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and sexy cyberpunk Lisbeth Salander. Directed by DAVID FINCHER from a script by STEVE ZAILLIAN, the film stars DANIEL CRAIG and ROONEY MARA.
A hugely popular best seller, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was a ubiquitous presence (especially in airports) and its fans covered a broad base. During our interview with DANIEL CRAIG, he talked about having read the book before being offered the role. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

‘THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO’ HITS BLU-RAY & DVD MARCH 20TH

I can understand why movie buffs refuse to switch to the Blu-ray format, but the March 20th release of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is just another reason to make the understandably costly change.  The film, directed by David Fincher, is coming out as a one-disc DVD, but Blu-ray fans will get a three-disc offering, loaded with over four hours of special features content.

Both editions come with an audio commentary track from Fincher, with the three-disc Blu-ray buyers receiving extensive interviews with Rooney Mara (Lisbeth Salander), Daniel Craig (Mikael Blomkvist), and Stellan Skarsgard (Martin Vanger).  Also included are a plethora of featurettes which delve into shooting the movie in Sweden, editing the picture, a look at the Main Title sequence (with commentary from Blur Studio owner Tim Miller), TV spots, and theatrical trailers.

David Fincher talks about Lisbeth Salander’s sexuality in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo:

DAVID FINCHER PRAISES ‘DRAGON TATTOO’S’ ROONEY MARA: “SHE WAS INDOMITABLE”

Since it’s release over the holidays, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has taken in a disappointing $32.4 million, and hopefully the critically acclaimed piece (Rooney Mara’s garnering excellent reviews for her inspired take on Lisbeth Sander) will find its footing this weekend (the picture’s budget is estimated at $90 million).

On a brighter note, David Fincher was effusive (as effusive as a cerebral filmmaker can be) over his collaboration with Mara and co-star Daniel Craig, whom he sees as a modern day Robert Mitchum. The following clip is an insightful peek into how Fincher gradually convinced that Mara, who worked with him on The Social Network, was the perfect choice for Lisbeth Sander:

Daniel Craig Takes Getting In Shape For His Films Seriously

daniel-craig_08Now playing in theaters, the highly anticipated THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is enjoying mixed reviews at the holiday season box office. This R-rated American adaptation of the best-selling Swedish thriller by STIEG LARSON is directed by DAVID FINCHER from a script by STEVE ZALLION and stars DANIEL CRAIG, ROONEY MARA, CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, STELLAN SKARSGARD and JOELY EICHARDSON.
Taking no time to enjoy his current success, CRAIG is currently in production on SKYFALL, the 23rd action adventure centered on James Bond, the character created by author Ian Fleming in 1953. Directed by Academy Award-winner SAM MENDES from a screenplay by NEAL PURVIS, ROBERT WADE and JOHN LOGAN, the film also stars JAVIER BARDEM, DAME JUDI DENCH, RALPH FINNES, ALBERT FINNEY and BEN WHISHAW. As the sixth actor to play Bond on the big screen, CRAIG doesn’t shy away from the rock ’em, sock ’em action scenes and recently talked about getting in shape for the role. DAVID FINCHER AIMS TO “ENABLE” AND “CAJOLE” PERFORMANCES IN ‘DRAGON TATTOO’

Although praised for his arresting visual style, director David Fincher often gets overlooked for his stellar work with actors.  Brad Pitt and Taraji P. Henson received Actor and Supporting Actress Oscar nods for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and more recently Jesse Eisenberg was honored with a Best Actor Oscar nod for The Social Network.

Mr. Fincher is behind the camera once again with a new version of The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, and during a press conference to promote the film he explains why, when working with actors, he never “extracts” a performance.  “You enable a performance,” says Fincher. “You cajole a performance, you prod…you’re trying to be efficient on any shoot day and actors are trying to be efficient as well and they are trying to get at the essential.”

The detail oriented Fincher elaborates on a scene in the film with Joely Richardson (she plays Anita Vanger).  Click on the media bar to hear Fincher break down the sequence, and in the process he gives a bit of insight into his creative process:
