Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, Ready Player One, features plenty of callbacks to a decade he knows well and loves, the 1980s. That choice wasn’t Spielberg’s to make, though — the character who designed the movie’s game, James Halliday, was totally obsessed with the ’80s in the original book, and Spielberg happily went along for the ride in the time machine. It also holds the Number 1 spot in another important category: Of all the films he’s done, E.T. is Spielberg’s favorite. Why?
