New To Blu: Tim Burton Revisits A TV Classic With ‘Dark Shadows’

dark-shadows-blu1Just released this week on DVD and Blu-ray, DARK SHADOWS is the hugely uneven big screen adaptation of the goofy daytime soap opera first introduced to television audiences in the late 1960s. Centered on Barnabas Collins, a vampire who wakes up in 1972 from a 200 year nap, the film is a weird comedy/horror hybrid that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. That said, the movie never disappoints in the areas of style and design. Beautifully imagined, it’s a true feast for the eyes and, despite the hysterical claims made against it, proved to be a box office moneymaker with a world-wide gross of almost $240 m (and that’s not even counting upcoming ancillary sales).
Responding to critics’ cries that the film would be a flop, BURTON was sanguine at the press conference to promote its theatrical release. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Daytime TV Royalty Turns The Page To Historical Fiction With ‘Trumpet’

trumpet-300For over forty years BILL and SUSAN SEAFORTH HAYES have captivated daytime audiences as on-again-off-again couple Doug and Julie Williams on the hugely popular drama DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Together, the Emmy Award-winning couple have co-authored a memoir (LIKE SANDS THROUGH THE HOURGLASS) and, most recently, joined forces to pen an epic work of historical fiction titled TRUMPET.
Set in the Regency Era, the book follows the adventurous exploits of Elizabeth Trumpet, a tempestuous young woman determined to become an actress while crossing paths with some of the most illustrious characters in history.
Every bit as charming off-screen as on, the HAYES’ recently sat down with us to talk about the new project and admitted that working together on another book was so much fun they’re thinking of penning a sequel.

TRUMPET is available now in stores, on-line and wherever books are sold

Johnny Depp Recalls Days Of Being ‘Box Office Poison’

johnny_depp1_300_400Currently playing in theaters to mixed reviews, DARK SHADOWS is director TIM BURTON’S spoofy big screen adaptation of the ’60s daytime TV soap opera that took the country by storm. At one time a global cult favorite, the gothic drama now centers on 200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins trying to cope with life in the 1970s. Under BURTON’S direction, the new cast features JOHNNY DEPP, MICHELLE PFEIFFER, CHLOE GRACE MORETZ, EVA GREEN, JONNY LEE MILLER, HELENA BONHAM CARTER and JACKIE EARLE HALEY.
Never one to fret over what other people think of his work, DEPP recently admitted to us that, while things have been going well, his fortunes could easily turn and if that were to happen he’d still be able to carry on. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Burton & Depp Are Perfectly Fine With ‘Dark Shadows’ Outcome

dark-shadows1Opening in the No. 2 position on the weekend box office chart, DARK SHADOWS failed to live up to expectations with an estimated $28.8 M. Directed by TIM BURTON and starring JOHNNY DEPP, DARK SHADOWS might be an indication that these two need to change their m.o. in the future. But, at the press conference to promote the film, BURTON may have had a feeling about the opening box office when he admitted you can’t please everyone and said that he and his long-time collaborator just wanted to make the kind of movie they’d enjoy themselves.
