New To Blu: An All New Anniversary Edition Of ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’

et-bluAvailable today on DVD and Blu-ray, E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is arguably one of the greatest kids’ movies ever made and certainly one of the greatest films of the 1980s. Both enduring (and endearing) the film told the story of a stranded alien creature and the young suburban boy who makes him part of the family. Directed by STEVEN SPIELBERG from a script by MELISSA MATHISON, the cast featured HENRY THOMAS, DREW BARRYMORE, ROBERT MACNAUGHTON, DEE WALLACE and PETER COYOTE.

Winner of four Academy Awards out of nine nominations, the film continues to be a crowd pleaser and audience favorite. A few years ago, we sat down with a very grown-up HENRY THOMAS who talked about the good and bad sides of being thrust into the spotlight and his ultimate gratitude for the role. Literary History Comes To Life With ‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’

kidman-owenPremiering tonight on HBO, HEMINGWAY AND GELLHORN tells the tempestuous tale of the romance, marriage and eventual divorce of literary greats ERNEST HEMINGWAY & MARTHA GELLHORN. Dedicated to documenting the effects of the Spanish Civil War, the couple flaunted their relationship all over the world. Brilliantly rendered, the film meshes current footage with archival images to produce a “newsreel” effect that is immensely watchable and entertaining. Directed by PHILIP KAUFMAN from a script by JERRY STAHL and BARBARA TURNER, the cast includes NICOLE KIDMAN, ROBERT DUVALL, PARKER POSEY, TONY SHALHOUB, DAVID STRATHAIRN, BROOKE ADAMS, PETER COYOTE and DIANE BAKER.
In what is arguably her best performance in years, KIDMAN is terrific as GELLHORN, a gutsy journalist who was as egoistic as she was adventurous. Promoting the project at the Television Critics Association press event, she talked about what appealed to her in playing the role. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Raise A Glass To The New PBS Series ‘Prohibition’

2011-09-28-prohibitionEnjoying its debut this weekend on PBS, PROHIBITION is a six-hour miniseries from Award-winning documentary filmmaker KEN BURNS and his highly trained team of historians. Bound to please lounge-lizards and teetotalers alike, the series takes an in-depth look at the rise and fall of the 18th Amendment, the hypocrisy it engendered and its consequences, both intended and otherwise. Using interviews and archival footage to show the hopelessness of a forced faith driven moral code, the series is narrated by PETER COYOTE and features voiceovers from PATRICIA CLARKSON, SAMUEL L. JACKSON, BLYTHE DANNER, PAUL GIAMATTI, TOM HANKS, JOHN LITHGOW and OLIVER PLATT. Not at all stodgy, BURNS’ documentary is as entertaining as it is informative.
At the recent press conference to promote the program, author DANIEL OKRENT (on whose book the series is based) told one of his favorite drinking stories from the show. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
