Criterion’s ‘100 Years of Olympic Films’ Hits Blu-Ray In December

As far as holiday gift ideas go, grabbing a Blu-ray or DVD set of Olympic themed discs is a great choice. On December 5, Criterion will release 100 Years of Olympic Films which features 53 newly restored movies and 41 editions of the Olympic Summer and Winter Games. The iconic Olympics work of filmmakers Milos Forman, Claude Lelouch, Leni Riefenstahl and Kon Ichikawa are included in the set.

Documentaries in the set include spotlights on Jesse Owens’ world breaking run in 1936 Berlin, Ski racer Jean Claude-Killy winning three gold medals in 1968, and Joan Benoit winning the first ever women’s marathon in 1984.

Special features on the collection include a 216 page hardcover book featuring essays from film historian Peter Cowie, new scores for the silent films (composed by Maud Nelissen, Donald Sosin, and Frido ter Beek), and 4K restorations of Olympia, Tokyo Olympiad and Visions of Eight.
