Willem Dafoe To Receive Icon Award At Palm Springs International Film FEstival

Willem Dafoe will receive the Icon Award at the 29th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) for his work in The Florida Project. The Film Awards Gala takes place at the Palm Springs Convention Center January 2 and will be hosted by Mary Hart.

Dafoe’s previous movie credits include The Last Temptation of Christ, What Happened to Monday, and Affliction. “Willem Dafoe is a versatile actor who has appeared in over one hundred films in his stellar career,” said fest Chairman Harold Matzner. “In The Florida Project, Dafoe delivers a career defining performance as a hotel manager overseeing his sometimes unruly residents, which has received numerous critical accolades. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present this year’s Icon Award to Willem Dafoe.”

Dafoe has received two Oscar nominations (Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire). Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs January 2-2018.

Saoirse Ronan To Be Honored With The Desert Palm Achievement Award

Saoirse Ronan, who is receiving raves this year for her work in Lady Bird, will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award at The Palm Springs International Festival (PSIFF). The event will take place January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center with Mary Hart serving as the host. The actress previously received the PSIFF International Star Award in 2016 for her work in Brooklyn, a role which led to an Oscar nomination.

Saoirse Ronan delivers one of the most outstanding performances of this year as an outspoken high school student growing up in Sacramento in the critically acclaimed film Lady Bird,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Following her exceptional performances in Atonement and Brooklyn, Ronan is sure to receive her third Academy Award nomination. It is our honor to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress to Saoirse Ronan.”

Holly Hunter To Receive Career Achievement Award At Palm Springs Fest

Holly Hunter, who starred this year in The Big Sick, will receive the Career Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Film Awards Gala. Taking place January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, the event will be hosted by Mary Hart.

Holly Hunter’s career is filled with many memorable performances including her Academy Award winning role in The Piano as well as other films including Broadcast News, The Firm, The Incredibles and more,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In her recent film The Big Sick, she brings comedy and poignancy as a mother coping with her daughter’s coma, while bonding with her daughter’s ex-boyfriend. It is our great honor to present the Career Achievement Award to Holly Hunter.

“Spotlight” Shines On Andrew Garfield At Palm Springs International Film Festival

hacksawridge8Andrew Garfield, who’s given excellent work the past couple of years in the films 99 Homes and Hacksaw Ridge, will be honored with the Spotlight Award at the 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Andrew Garfield is one of the most versatile actors today and this is proven with his tremendous and critically acclaimed performance this year in Mel Gibson’s award-winning film Hacksaw Ridge,” said Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In Hacksaw Ridge, Garfield brings to life the incredible true story of World War II soldier Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector who refused to touch a gun during wartime and instead dedicated himself to saving lives as a combat medic. For this brilliant awards worthy performance, it is an honor to present Andrew Garfield with the Spotlight Award.”

Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Helen Hunt, Julia Roberts, Rooney Mara, and J.K. Simmons are past recipients of the Spotlight Award. Garfield also stars this year opposite Adam Driver and Liam Neeson in the Martin Scorsese directed epic Silence.

Garfield will receive the honor at the Film Awards Gala which is being held Monday, January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The fest runs January 2-16 and for more info check out the fest’s official site.

Mahershala Ali Honored With Breakthrough Performance Award At Palm Springs Fest

Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali will be honored with the Breakthrough Performance Award at the 28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala. Hosted by Mary Hart, the event takes place Monday, January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Mahershala Ali is one of the most in-demand actors in film and television,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Ali gives one of the best supporting performances of the year in Moonlight as Juan, a Miami drug dealer who opens his door to Little when he sees the boy being chased through the streets by a gang. For this role that has already received several awards and is sure to receive many more. It is our honor to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to Mahershala Ali.”

Past recipients for the honor include Jennifer Hudson, Marion Cotillard, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, and Brie Larson. Ali’s credits include Luke Cage, House of Cards, Hidden Figures and Free State of Jones. The actor recently received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Moonlight.
