Liam Neeson’s collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra has yielded first rate entertainment fare (Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night), and now the pair board an entirely different train (literally) with The Commuter.
Neeson stars as an insurance salesman who is threatened by a stranger (Vera Farmiga) to identify a passenger before the train hits its final stop. Failure to achieve that mission will presumably lead to a horrible fate for all the commuters, and Neeson must think fast on his feet to save the day. The final trailer has just been released, and even though it features a rather obvious movie line (Neeson commands “You stop this train now!”), it definitely delivers the goods. Since this is awards season, it’s great to have a straight up palette cleanser like The Commuter just around the corner. Check out the final trailer below and tell us what you think!
Liam Neeson’s go-to director is Jaume-Collet-Serra, as they have previously worked on the action/thrillers Non-Stop, Run All Night, and Unknown. Their latest offering The Commuter has the same breakneck tension as the previous releases, as Neeson plays an insurance salesman who must uncover the identity of a hidden passenger before the train hits its final stop. If he fails at his mission, this commuter risks the lives of himself and his fellow passenger.
Collet-Serra’s last feature had Blake Lively taking on a shark in The Shallows, and the filmmaker is one of today’s best genre storytellers around. Patrick Wilson, Sam Neill, ElizabethMcGovern and Vera Farmiga co-star in The Commuter, and since Neeson has previously stated that this will be his final action movie, let’s hope he makes this a memorable one. At the age of 62, Liam Neeson is considered an action star. Neeson, who in the past several years has starred in a few action films, including the Taken films, stars in the action thriller Non-Stop. Neeson plays an Air Marshall who is being extorted while being on a plane taken over by a terrorist who threatens to kill passengers unless he abides by his demands.
Needless to say, Neeson does what he can to save the plane and fights the terrorist. The film contains a lot of action. In our recent interview with Neeson he told us that he actually trained with a special forces solider who trains real Air Marshall’s, who worked with Neeson on being a realistic Air Marshall. Non-Stop is now available on DVD.
Several reasons why Non-Stopmay be a worthwhile action feature lies in the cast and crew involved. First off, Liam Neeson reteams with Unknowndirector Jaume Collett-Serra, whose movies, if anything else, brings a high level of visual design to the process. With Neeson and co-star Julianne Moore on board, this flight disaster/thriller may, pardon the pun, have wings.
“He’s a very, very prepared director,” said Neeson of Collet-Serra. “Any queries we had about the script, about what a character should do or not do, we always tried to judge it to the nth degree. He was always thinking about the overall arc – the symphony of the whole film.”
Neeson, who along with Kevin Costner is the closest thing we have these days to Gary Cooper (all three are great at playing stoic, well intentioned protagonists), explained at the Non-Stop interviews why he loves playing vulnerable heroes.
