Morgan Freeman has his preferences and he prefers to work with directors who trust him. That’s why Clint Eastwood has been a favorite filmmaker for the actor.

Freeman says Eastwood does his research while choosing the cast, then gets out of the way while allowing the actors to do the work necessary.

It’s a method that’s benefited Eastwood’s productions in the past with Academy Award-nominated actors and films like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby, which was also an Oscar-winning role for Freeman.

Now Freeman stands a good chance of getting another nomination for the Eastwood directed flick Invictus, where he plays South African President Nelson Mandela. The actor has already gotten a lot of recognition including a both Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics Choice and Hollywood Foreign Press Association Golden Globe nomination.

Invictus is in theaters.

138Clint Eastwood was all over the idea of having Matt Damon star as Francois Pienaar in his epic flick Invictus. The story revolves around Nelson Mandela’s first term as President of South Africa and his belief that rugby would unite the nation.

It wasn’t like Eastwood knew a whole lot about the real-life South African rugby captain or Mandela’s plan for that matter. It’s just that the director knew the role was demanding and that Damon would do all the research necessary to put a solid spin on the character.

Invictus, which is currently in theaters, has already amassed acting and directing nominations from several critics groups for Eastwood, Freeman and Damon.

Clint Eastwood-InvictusClint Eastwood admits he knew very little about former South African President Nelson Mandela before he began production on his epic film, Invictus.

The filmmaker was aware of the history, just not how Mandela united South Africa by way of sports – specifically the rugby team – and that was a story Eastwood knew the movie-going audience would respond to.
