When actors get ready to play a real-life character, they sometimes have the advantage of speaking with that person to gain insight into their thoughts and behavior. Margot Robbie has been getting rave reviews as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, but when it came to figuring out the character, Robbie was on her own. While she did plenty of research and watched a lot of video to learn Harding’s skating moves, she didn’t get a chance to meet with Harding herself until filming was just about to start.
I, Tonya, which also features a Golden Globe-winning performance from Allison Janney, is in theaters now.
I, Tonya was a passion project for Margot Robbie: Not only does she portray Olympic ice skater Tonya Harding, she also helped get the film made as a producer. Her dedication has been rewarded with rave reviews for her performance, including Golden Globes nominations for both the film and her performance. Robbie told us the movie was not an easy one to make, and her team had to jump through plenty of hoops before it all came together.
I, Tonya, starring Robbie and fellow Golden Globe nominee Allison Janney, is currently playing in selected theaters.
There’s no denying that Allison Janney is a talented woman. Her seven Emmy awards — four for playing C.J. Cregg on The West Wing, one for a guest role on Masters of Sex, and two for her current series, Mom — easily attest to that fact. But did you know that Janney has some hidden talents? In fact, it’s kind of ironic that she’s playing Tonya Harding’s mother in the new movie I, Tonya, because when she was a teen, Janney was quite an ice skater herself!
