Scooping its official January 11th theatrical release by a few weeks, STRUCK BY LIGHTNING debuts on several “on demand” platforms today. Written by and starring GLEE headliner CHRIS COLFER, the film is directed by BRIAN DANNELLY (SAVED!) and also features in its cast ALLISON JANNEY, POLLY BERGEN, REBEL WILSON, CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, DERMOT MULRONEY and SARAH HYLAND. Funny, insightful and tinged with teen darkness, STRUCK BY LIGHTNING appears to be the start of a promising screenwriting career for COLFER.
Probably best known for his role as openly gay high school student Kurt Hummel on GLEE, COLFER made waves when he declared himself to be gay as well. During our interview a few days ago, he admitted that coming out was a much bigger deal to the media than it was to him.

Filmmaker GUS VAN SANT’s Best Director Academy Award-nomination was just one of eight Oscar nods the illustrious biopic MILK received for telling the story of the life and times of HARVEY MILK, the activist who became America’s first openly gay elected official. Now, five years later, long-time VAN SANT collaborator MATT DAMON has wrapped production on another gay biopic, this one telling the story of LIBERACE, one of America’s most flamboyant and closeted gay entertainers. Directed by STEVEN SODERBERGH from a script by RICHARD LaGRAVENESE, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA stars MICHAEL DOUGLAS as LIBERACE and DAMON as his much younger paramour.
Sitting down with VAN SANT a few days ago to talk about his upcoming drama PROMISED LAND, we asked if he thought the LIBERACE and HARVEY MILK biopics might have anything in common or if that would be like comparing apples and oranges. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)

Soon to be seen in the issue oriented PROMISED LAND as a gas company huckster trying to sell an impoverished rural community on the benefits of fracking, Academy Award-winning actor MATT DAMON is taking a walk on the wild side in his next film, a behind-the-scenes look at the life of iconic entertainer LIBERACE. A chronicle of the flamboyant pianist’s relationship with paid companion Scott Thorson, the film is said to delve into the details of their life together and its aftermath. Directed by STEVEN SODERBERGH, the cast is headed by MICHAEL DOUGLAS as LIBERACE and DAMON as SCOTT THORSON.
We spoke with MATT DAMON a few days ago about his upcoming films and he indicates that BEHIND THE CANDELABRA might be more than just another Hollywood biopic.

Currently in theaters and doing surprisingly well at the box office, LINCOLN appears to be living up to its advance hype and racing towards the front of the awards season line. Directed by STEVEN SPIELBERG from a script by award-winning playwright TONY KUSHNER, the impressive cast includes DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, SALLY FIELD, JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT, JOHN HAWKES, WALTER GOGGINS, JACKIE EARL HALEY, JAMES SPADER and TOMMY LEE JONES. During the Beverly Hills press conference to promote the film, DANIEL DAY-LEWIS (whose titular performance almost guarantees an Oscar nomination) confessed that he made a few discoveries about the 16th POTUS while researching the role, not the least of which was a “delicious” sense of humor . Currently in theaters and finally gaining a little awards consideration attention, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER is STEPHEN CHBOSKY’S own big-screen adaptation of his best selling young adult novel of the same name and follows the adolescent coming-of-age of a 15-year-old high schooler trying to cope with first love, loss and mental illness. Directed by CHBOSKY as well, the film features the captivating and completely committed performances of leads LOGAN LERMAN, EMMA WATSON and EZRA MILLER. First-time director, CHBOSKY is to be congratulated not just for a great adaptation of his own book but also for the perfect ensemble cast he’s put together. Despite getting great notices for his performance, it was just a couple of years ago (during interviews for PERCY JACKSON) that LERMAN confided in us that the kind of role he plays in PERKS is exactly the kind of character he was hoping to avoid.
