As evidenced with the critically acclaimed In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, filmmaker Martin McDonagh knows how to find humor amidst tragedy. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri centers on a mother (Frances McDormand) who is attempting to find justice for her murdered daughter. Under different hands, this story would be a straight ahead drama, but McDonagh has other plans.
“Well because it sort of starts off in such a sad place I didn’t want to stay or dwell in that place for too long,” said McDonagh. “My natural metier as they say in France is to try and find some kind of humor in most situations. Not to stay in the darkness but to try and find something a little bit lighter than that.”
It wouldn’t have been funny if Frances McDormand rejected the part, as she was McDonagh’s first and presumably only choice for the part. Click on the media bar below to hear McDonagh talk about casting McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri opens in select theaters on Friday, November 10.
On the latest episode of CinemAddicts we cover the films we’re looking forward to in the month of November. Topping that list is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which is opening in limited release November 17. The flick, which is getting a ton of critical praise, will surely net another Oscar nomination for Frances McDormand who plays a mother who is trying to find justice for her daughter’s murder.
Several films are also reviewed in the podcast, as I discuss the upcoming films My Friend Dahmer, Sweet Virginia, and Blade of the Immortal. Ross Lynch gives one of this year’s best performances as the young Jeffrey Dahmer, and this Disney and music star proves he can take on challenging dramatic material (the house featured in the film is Dahmer’s actual childhood home). Opening November 17, Sweet Virginia is a first rate, Alaskan set thriller starring Jon Bernthal and Christopher Abbott. Blade of the Immortal, like My Friend Dahmer, opens November 3 and is director Takashi Miike’s latest samurai masterpiece.

Soon to be seen in the upcoming drama PROMISED LAND, actress ROSEMARIE DeWITT sat down recently with reporters to talk about her life and career. A veteran of television, stage and screen, DeWITT has been seen this year in NOBODY WALKS, THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN and YOUR SISTER’S SISTER. Probably best known for her titular role in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED (for which she was nominated for several critics awards), she also had a role in director RON HOWARD’S biopic CINDERELLA MAN, which told the story of her real-life grandfather JAMES J. BRADDOCK (portrayed by RUSSELL CROWE in the film).
During our interview, DeWITT reminisced about her legendary boxing great relative.
Wow! The overwhelming response to the news that Oscar-winner MATT DAMON and OFFICE star JOHN KRASINSKI have teamed-up to write, produce and star in feature films would be shocking if not for it being so amusing. It seems every interview they do includes a ‘defense’ of KRASINSKI’S involvement in the possible “break-up” of the Academy Award-winning GOOD WILL HUNTING team.
Opening in limited release later this month in order to qualify for awards consideration, PROMISED LAND is the first collaborative effort of the new partners. Part cautionary tale and part social commentary, the film is directed by GUS VAN SANT and stars DAMON and KRASINSKI as well as FRANCIS McDORMAND, SCOOT McNAIRY, HAL HOLBROOK, ROSEMARIE DeWITT and LUCAS BLACK.
During our interview last weekend, KRASINSKI joked about all the “concern” over his working with DAMON.

This is a really impressive beginning for the partnership of DAMON and KRASINSKI, who tell us there are more projects in the pipeline. During our interview last weekend, Academy Award-winner DAMON talked about how he and KRASINSKI got together. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
