Saoirse Ronan Returns To Ian McEwan Universe With ‘On Chesil Beach’

It was Atonement, based on Ian McEwan’s novel, which placed Saoirse Ronan on the map (and earned her an Oscar nomination), and now she’s back in the writer’s playground with On Chesil Beach. Ronan recently received her third Oscar nod for her work in Lady Bird.

Based on McEwan’s 2007 novel, On Chesil Beach centers on Florence (Ronan), a violinist who marries a grad student named Eddy (Billy Howle). The narrative centers on their eventful honeymoon in the summer of 1962 as they explore their sexuality. The first few days of marriage should be a hot and heavy one, but instead these lovebirds have their share of conflicts. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!

Co-starring Emily Watson and Anne-Marie Duff, On Chesil Beach hits theaters May 18.

The Book Thief’s Sophie Nélisse On The Joys of Reading

The Book Thief (Twentieth Century Fox, CR: Jules Heath)

Based on the bestselling novel by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief centers on Liesel (Sophie Nélisse), a resilient girl whose life in a German town during WWII is not exactly idyllic. Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson co-star as the loving foster parents who help Liesel navigate the tragic waters of the ensuing years. Brian Percival, best known for his work on Downton Abbey, directs the feature.

During a recent interview, Nélisse talked about her passion for reading, and added that she would rather turn the page of a real book than peruse a narrative on her iPad.

“I think reading is important because for the time that you read, you are not yourself,” says Nelisse, who also starred in the evocative and subtle drama Monsieur Lazhar. “You’re in your little bubble. (It’s) just you and no one else and you get to imagine some things. That’s why I like it.”
