John Cena came to Hollywood carrying a tough-guy persona honed through years on the WWE circuit. Somewhat surprisingly, though, he loves doing comedy, like in his new movie, Blockers. When we talked to him, Cena said he understands there are a lot of laughs to be had from making fun of that tough-guy image, and he’s fine with that. (Click on the media bar below to hear John Cena)
Steve Carell is one of the best comedic actors in movies and films today. Many will remember his great roles in television and films including The Office, Anchorman,The 40 Year Old Virgin, and his latest film, Despicable Me 2, where he reprises the character Gru.
While we can’t imagine not seeing Carell in funny roles, early in his career, Carell never thought he would be a comedic actor. He told us that when he was starting out, all he wanted to do was act and took any roles that came his way. (Click on the media bar below to hear Steve Carell)
Opening in theaters today, JUDD APATOW’s latest comedy, THIS IS 40, revisits the characters of Pete and Debbie from his hit KNOCKED UP and paints a genuine (and genuinely entertaining) portrait of a married couple with a family facing middle aged crazy. Written and directed by APATOW, the cast includes his real-life wife, LESLIE MANN, as well as daughters IRIS and MAUDE. Joining in are PAUL RUDD, MELISSA McCARTHY, MEGAN FOX, JASON SEGEL, JOHN LITHGOW, CHRIS O’DOWD, LENA DUNHAM and ALBERT BROOKS. Facing entertainment reporters recently in Manhattan, MANN talked about being married to a comic genius who draws much of his material from their actual life together. Soon to be seen starring alongside BILLY CRYSTAL in the domestic comedy PARENTAL GUIDANCE, iconic performer BETTE MIDLER brings to the screen the sassy presence she’s made her trademark over the years. As half of an unconventional pair of grandparents called into babysitting service, MIDLER is, as usual, a treat to watch.
A veteran of stage, screen and television, MIDLER’S music is what often brings people to the party. Countless covers of pop standards and classics have made her (and her Divine Miss M persona) an audience favorite. Given the season, we would be remiss not mentioning her COOL YULE holiday collection. A brilliant collection of classic Christmas songs that includes WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEW YEAR’S EVE?, MELE KALIKIMAKA and the titular COOL YULE. During an interview we did a couple of years ago, MIDLER talked about her appreciation for pop standards and why she enjoys them. (CLICK ON THE MEDIA BAR FOR AUDIO)
Opening in theaters today, the highly anticipated domestic comedy THE GUILT TRIP marks a return to the big-screen of mega-star BARBRA STREISAND and features her and popular comic actor SETH ROGEN as a mother and son determined to make the most of a cross-country road trip despite the fact that it’s working overtime to test their already strained relationship. Mostly played for laughs (but cursed with all the stereotypical cliches and characterizations one might expect) the film is made bearable primarily because of the total likeability of its stars. At a recent press conference to promote the movie, STREISAND talked about the relationship she shares with her own son, JASON GOULD, and how he (and her ex, ELLIOTT GOULD) gave their thumbs-up to the project.
