Three seasons in and Superstore continues to grow as a show, and as a Newsweek article accurately pointed out, the program spotlights a huge section of America that is underrepresented in comedy. Filled with a diverse cast spearheaded by America Ferrera andBen Feldman, the show, which centers on the lives of a St. Louis, Missouri “superstore” named Cloud 9, subtly sneaks in important topics amidst all the comedy (for reference, check out the episode “Health Fund”).
Another reason for the show’s success lies in the chemistry among the ensemble. Ferrera and Feldman have that all important spark, and co-stars Lauren Ash and Nico Santos are also great friends off the set. America Ferrera is a producer and headliner of NBC’s Superstore, a series which was recently renewed for a third season. During our interview with Ferrera, she talked about how directing an episode of Superstore gave her a deeper appreciation of co-star Ben Feldman and the program’s diverse ensemble.
“Being behind the camera, watching the entire cast work and watching Ben work was such a gift,” said Ferrera. “I didn’t know it was possible to have more gratitude and awe for the level of this cast but I will say specifically watching Ben work – it’s amazing. When you’re in a scene with someone, you’re in it and you’re feeling it. But when you get to watch and be the director and you get to see someone craft a performance – it was really exciting to see Ben at his craft from that point of view.”

The workplace comedy Superstore features America Ferreraand Ben Feldman as employees at a megastore that houses its share of eccentric employees. Although part of comedy is rooted in over the top behavior, witty repartee, and slapstick, a healthy dose of reality is thrown in the mix.
“We didn’t set out to make a documentary (with Superstore),” said Ferrera. “And it turns out that our insane scenarios that we are using for comedy are not even strange enough for what a big-box store is like.”
Feldman is the atypical shopper who will actually go to a store and buy the exact thing he wanted. Ferrera’s shopping habits are much more universal, as venturing to a store without a few things in mind, along with the purchase of additional items, is simply the natural order of business!
