Ava DuVernay made her name as a director through a number of well-received, socially conscious documentaries, getting an Oscar nomination for 2016’s 13th. Her latest project is a movie adaptation of the classic children’s novel, A Wrinkle In Time, and its star, Chris Pine, says DuVernay’s background made her an inspired choice to take on the movie. Filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, Middle of Nowhere) will be honored with the 2018 Visionary Award from the Producers Guild of America (PGA). DuVernay will receive the honor at the 29th Annual Producers Guild Awards January 20th at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
“The emergence of Ava DuVernay as a producer and filmmaker has been one of the great developments of the past several years,” said Producers Guild Awards Chairs Donald De Line and Amy Pascal. “Whether in scripted features, television, or documentaries, her unique voice, skill and passion have inspired countless audiences throughout our country and around the world. She is, by any standard, a visionary storyteller, and we are excited to be honoring her as such in 2018.
The award spotlights producers in television, film and new media who have made “unique or uplifting” work via inspired storytelling or performance. DuVernay earned two Emmys for her documentary 13th and, along with the March 2018 release of her next directing effort A Wrinkle in Time, she is also a producer on the TV series Queen Sugar.
Chris Pine was already in this summer’s biggest blockbuster, Wonder Woman. And it looks like he’s got another hit lined up for next year. Pine will be starring in the movie adaptation of the classic children’s book, A Wrinkle In Time, alongside Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Mindy Kaling. He told us he was overwhelmed by the experience of working on the movie with a director he really admires, Ava DuVernay.

For many schoolkids, the classic 1963 novel A Wrinkle In Time was required reading, and for good reason. The sci-fi story, about a young girl who travels across the universe to rescue her father, was fun, imaginative, and thought-provoking. Now it’s being reimagined as a movie by acclaimed director Ava DuVernay, with an all-star cast that includes Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey. We talked to the three actresses, who each expressed their love and passion for the film.
