On this day in 1922, Frances Gumm, later known as Judy Garland, was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Her parents ran a movie theater, and Frances soon joined her older sisters in a vaudeville act preceding the films. Later, she and her sisters toured the vaudeville circuit together. At age 13, she signed a film contract with MGM and at age 15 made the first of many films with Mickey Rooney. Her 1939 film, THE WIZARD OF OZ, remains a classic as well as such titles as A STAR IS BORN, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS and I COULD GO ON SINGING. Garland began using amphetamines as a teenager to control her weight and developed a dependency on drugs and alcohol that led to her death in 1969. Had she lived, GARLAND would have been 90 today but she continues to be remembered as one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

On this day in 1976, Warner Brothers released A STAR IS BORN. This third remake of the original WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD? starred BARBRA STREISAND and KRIS KRISTOFFERSON as an up-and-coming songstress and a washed-up rock star who fall into a tragic love affair. A huge success in the day, it looks pretty campy now.
