‘The Shape of Water’ And ‘Big Little Lies’ Top Critics’ Choice Awards

THE SHAPE OF WATER

The Shape of Water, director Guillermo del Toro’s most celebrated film since Pan’s Labyrinth, took home four awards (including Best Picture) at the 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards. Big Little Lies topped the television side with four awards (including Best Limited Series). Actor and activist Olivia Munn hosted the festivities. The film and television winners are below:

Willem Dafoe To Receive Icon Award At Palm Springs International Film FEstival

Willem Dafoe will receive the Icon Award at the 29th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) for his work in The Florida Project. The Film Awards Gala takes place at the Palm Springs Convention Center January 2 and will be hosted by Mary Hart.

Dafoe’s previous movie credits include The Last Temptation of Christ, What Happened to Monday, and Affliction. “Willem Dafoe is a versatile actor who has appeared in over one hundred films in his stellar career,” said fest Chairman Harold Matzner. “In The Florida Project, Dafoe delivers a career defining performance as a hotel manager overseeing his sometimes unruly residents, which has received numerous critical accolades. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present this year’s Icon Award to Willem Dafoe.”

Dafoe has received two Oscar nominations (Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire). Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs January 2-2018.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay Honored With PGA’s Visionary Award

Ava DuVernayFilmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, Middle of Nowhere) will be honored with the 2018 Visionary Award from the Producers Guild of America (PGA). DuVernay will receive the honor at the 29th Annual Producers Guild Awards January 20th at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

“The emergence of Ava DuVernay as a producer and filmmaker has been one of the great developments of the past several years,” said Producers Guild Awards Chairs Donald De Line and Amy Pascal. “Whether in scripted features, television, or documentaries, her unique voice, skill and passion have inspired countless audiences throughout our country and around the world. She is, by any standard, a visionary storyteller, and we are excited to be honoring her as such in 2018.

The award spotlights producers in television, film and new media who have made “unique or uplifting” work via inspired storytelling or performance. DuVernay earned two Emmys for her documentary 13th and, along with the March 2018 release of her next directing effort A Wrinkle in Time, she is also a producer on the TV series Queen Sugar.

Holly Hunter To Receive Career Achievement Award At Palm Springs Fest

Holly Hunter, who starred this year in The Big Sick, will receive the Career Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Film Awards Gala. Taking place January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, the event will be hosted by Mary Hart.

Holly Hunter’s career is filled with many memorable performances including her Academy Award winning role in The Piano as well as other films including Broadcast News, The Firm, The Incredibles and more,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In her recent film The Big Sick, she brings comedy and poignancy as a mother coping with her daughter’s coma, while bonding with her daughter’s ex-boyfriend. It is our great honor to present the Career Achievement Award to Holly Hunter.

The Film Awards Gala, hosted by Mary Hart, takes place January 2nd at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Gary Oldman brings to screen one of the most powerful performances of this year as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour,” said Fest chairman Harold Matzner. “Portraying Britain’s steadfast leader during the tumultuous era of World War II, he has already earned rave reviews from critics and is sure to garner awards attention this season. The Palm Springs International Film Festival is honored to present Gary Oldman with this year’s Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor.”

Gal Gadot To Be Honored With Rising Star Award At Palm Springs Fest


Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot will be honored with the Rising Star Award at the 29th annual Palm Springs International Festival. The Film Awards Gala, hosted by Mary Hart, takes place January 2nd at the Palm Springs Convention Center with the fest taking place January 4-15.
