Marshals Season 2 is almost here, but fans waiting to see Kayce and Beth Dutton together again are going to have to wait a little longer.
The first season certainly left the door open for a crossover with Dutton Ranch, but it apparently will not happen this time around.
That does not mean the idea is dead. Far from it.
According to a new interview with ScreenRant, Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut says bringing Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly back together remains something both sides would like to make happen.
And considering where these two shows have taken the Dutton family, that reunion feels like something Yellowstone fans are eventually going to want.
Marshals Season 2 will not reunite Kayce and Beth
The first season of Marshals ended with Tate Dutton, played by Brecken Merrill, in serious trouble and a storyline pointing toward Texas.
That immediately got people wondering.
Beth and Rip are now building their life in Texas on Dutton Ranch, so sending Kayce in that direction seemed like a pretty convenient way to bring the two branches of the family back together.
Apparently, that possibility was not lost on the people making the shows.
Hudnut told ScreenRant that a crossover has been discussed from the beginning and remains a goal. The problem is less about whether anybody wants to do it and more about actually getting the two productions lined up.
Different filming schedules, locations and production calendars make something that sounds easy on paper a lot more complicated once cameras are involved.
So Marshals Season 2 will keep Kayce and Beth apart.
For now.
Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly still have unfinished Dutton business
It makes sense that people keep asking about this reunion.
Kayce and Beth spent years as part of the same family story on Yellowstone, even if their relationship was not always the center of the show.
Now they are carrying separate corners of that universe.
Grimes leads Marshals as Kayce moves into a very different chapter of his life, while Reilly and Cole Hauser continue Beth and Rip’s story on Dutton Ranch.
That makes a reunion feel a little different than the usual television crossover.
It would not simply be two shows putting their casts together for an episode. These are siblings who went through everything the Dutton family went through and then ended up heading in different directions.
At some point, seeing them in the same room again just makes sense.
Grimes has also previously talked about staying in touch with Reilly and wanting Kayce and Beth to cross paths again.
So the interest seems to be there on both sides of the camera.
Marshals Season 2 keeps the Dutton Ranch crossover door open
That Texas setup at the end of Season 1 probably did not happen by accident.
Hudnut acknowledged that pointing the story toward Texas worked as a tease and could eventually provide an easy way to bring characters from the two shows together.
Whether that happens next season, farther down the road or somewhere else in the Yellowstone universe remains to be seen.
But at least the door is still wide open.
And Marshals Season 2 is not completely leaving its Yellowstone connections behind.
Jefferson White brings another Yellowstone connection to Marshals
One familiar face is already confirmed.
Jefferson White will return as Jimmy Hurdstrom, the former Yellowstone ranch hand who eventually made his way to Texas and the Four Sixes.
Exactly how Jimmy fits into the new season remains to be seen, but his return gives Marshals another direct connection to the world that started all of this.
It also proves these shows are not afraid to bring old characters back when the story gives them a reason.
That should keep the Kayce and Beth speculation alive for a while.
The reunion may not happen in Marshals Season 2, but it certainly sounds like the people behind both shows know fans are waiting for it.
Eventually, the Duttons may just find their way back to each other.
Marshals Season 2 premieres October 4 on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
