Téa Leoni and Tim Daly already know a thing or two about playing married on television. They spent six seasons together on Madam Secretary as Elizabeth and Henry McCord, a couple trying to keep a family together while dealing with some pretty enormous pressures. Then life imitated art. After meeting on the show and dating for years, Leoni and Daly married in real life in 2025.
Now they’re doing marriage again, but under very different circumstances. Newlyweds reunites Leoni and Daly for a later-in-life love story about two people who do something wonderfully impulsive. They fall hard, get married quickly and then discover that saying “I do” might have been the easy part.
Téa Leoni and Tim Daly are newlyweds again
In Newlyweds, Leoni plays Jeanie, a free-spirited woman who falls for James, a much more buttoned-up professor played by Daly. After a whirlwind courtship, they decide to get married.
Romantic? Absolutely. Potentially complicated? Definitely.
James may only have eyes for Jeanie, but he quickly discovers that marrying her also means becoming part of the big, eccentric world of friends and family that comes with her. Of course, Jeanie has to do the same with James.
That gives the series a pretty relatable idea to play with. Falling in love with somebody is one thing. Figuring out how all the other people in both of your lives fit into the equation can be something else entirely.
Téa Leoni and Tim Daly reunite after Madam Secretary
Seeing Leoni and Daly together again should immediately feel familiar to fans of Madam Secretary. For six seasons, they played Elizabeth and Henry McCord, and their marriage became one of the emotional anchors of the CBS drama. Whatever political or professional crisis Elizabeth was facing, the relationship between the two characters gave the series something personal to come home to.
Newlyweds lets the actors flip that dynamic. Instead of playing a couple with years of marriage behind them, they’re starting at the beginning. Jeanie and James are still learning each other’s habits, families, friendships and all the little surprises that tend to show up once the honeymoon glow meets everyday life.
Same actors. Completely different marriage.
Jamie Lee Curtis helped create Newlyweds
There is another familiar name behind the series. Jamie Lee Curtis co-created Newlyweds and serves as an executive producer. She will also appear as what NBC is calling a “Very Special Guest Star.”
Gail Lerner wrote the series, with the cast also including Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Bill O’Neill and Al Madrigal. With Curtis involved both behind and in front of the camera, there is plenty of room for the show to lean into the messier, funnier side of family life.
And based on the setup, there should be quite a bit of family to deal with.
Newlyweds is about what happens after the whirlwind romance
Plenty of romantic comedies end with the wedding. Newlyweds essentially starts there.
Jeanie and James already made the big romantic gesture. Now they have to figure out what happens when two established adults combine lives that were already pretty full before they met.
There are friends. There are relatives. There are routines. There are probably habits neither one mentioned during that whirlwind courtship. That is where the fun begins.
And having Leoni and Daly at the center gives the series a pair of actors who already know how to make a television marriage feel lived-in, even if these particular newlyweds are only beginning to figure each other out.
