Dave Bautista’s secret audition for Knock at the Cabin started without him even realizing he was being considered for the movie. The M. Night Shyamalan thriller first arrived in theaters in 2023, but it is getting another chance to find viewers now that it is streaming on Netflix. And for anyone discovering the movie for the first time, Dave Bautista’s road to becoming Leonard started in a pretty unusual way.
He did not even realize he was interviewing for the job. That seems appropriate for a Shyamalan movie. Even the casting process apparently came with a little mystery.
Dave Bautista’s secret audition came as a surprise
Knock at the Cabin marked the first time Bautista worked with M. Night Shyamalan, and the opportunity came together differently than he expected. Around the movie’s original release, Bautista told us that when he first met with the filmmaker, he did not understand that Shyamalan was essentially considering him for the role.
That meeting eventually led to Dave Bautista playing Leonard, the imposing but surprisingly soft-spoken leader of four strangers who arrive at a remote vacation cabin with a terrifying proposition. It is the kind of role where Bautista’s physical presence immediately gets your attention, but the performance depends on much more than that.
Leonard does not simply storm into the cabin as a conventional movie villain. He believes what he is saying. He is calm, emotional and seemingly horrified by what he believes has to happen. That gave Bautista something very different to play.

Knock at the Cabin gave Dave Bautista a different kind of role
By the time Knock at the Cabin arrived, Bautista had already spent years showing audiences that there was much more to him than his wrestling background or the physicality he brought to roles like Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Leonard pushed that even further.
The movie follows Eric and Andrew, played by Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, who are vacationing at a secluded cabin with their daughter Wen, played by Kristen Cui. Their peaceful trip falls apart when Leonard and three strangers arrive claiming the family must make an impossible sacrifice. If they refuse, the visitors insist the world will end.
Also joining Bautista are Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn and Rupert Grint. The setup is pure Shyamalan. Put a small group of people in an impossible situation, give them information they cannot completely trust and then make the audience wonder what they would do.
Knock at the Cabin finds another life on Netflix
That is one of the fun things about streaming. A movie does not necessarily stop finding an audience when its original theatrical run ends.
Someone who skipped Knock at the Cabin in 2023 can stumble across it on Netflix years later and experience the mystery without knowing where it is going. Others may be coming back to see how the clues fit together once they already know the story.
And Bautista’s performance remains one of the movie’s most interesting elements. At first glance, Leonard looks like the person you would least want appearing outside your cabin in the middle of nowhere. Then he starts talking. Suddenly, things become much more complicated.
That contrast gave Bautista a chance to play against what audiences might expect from him, while working for the first time with a filmmaker whose movies have always enjoyed keeping viewers a little off balance. Dave Bautista’s secret audition somehow makes the story of how he landed the role even more fitting for an M. Night Shyamalan movie.
Even the way Bautista got the job came with a twist.
Knock at the Cabin is available on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K, digital platforms and streaming on Netflix.
