Seven years later, Avengers: Endgame is back on top.

Of course it is.

Call it Endgame Déjà Vu.

Marvel put the 2019 blockbuster back in theaters as Avengers: Endgame Encore, and people showed up. According to Variety, the movie pulled in $11.2 million Friday from 3,060 locations and is looking at roughly $26 million for the weekend.

For a movie that millions of people have already seen, probably more than once, that’s a pretty impressive return.

The timing isn’t exactly a mystery. Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, and what better way to get everyone thinking about the Avengers again than putting one of Marvel’s biggest movies back on the big screen?

And Endgame was huge. The original release made about $2.799 billion worldwide.

Seven years later, apparently there was still some box office life left in it.

Here’s how the weekend Top 5 is shaping up.

Endgame Déjà Vu puts Marvel back at No. 1

Yep, Avengers: Endgame is No. 1 again.

Friday’s $11.2 million was enough to put it ahead of all the new movies opening this weekend. By Sunday, the re-release is expected to have around $26 million.

Think back to 2019 and it makes a little more sense. Avengers: Endgame wasn’t just another Marvel movie. It was the payoff to more than a decade of stories, characters and movies, and audiences treated it like an event.

Now Avengers: Endgame Encore is giving fans the chance to experience it that way again.

And quite a few apparently wanted that chance.

Primetime takes the No. 2 spot

A24’s Primetime came in second Friday with $8.49 million from 2,874 theaters.

The Robert Pattinson drama-thriller is headed toward approximately $20.5 million for the weekend. Pattinson stars in a story inspired by Chris Hansen’s years hosting To Catch a Predator on Dateline NBC.

There’s already been plenty of conversation surrounding this one. The movie generated buzz at Venice, while Hansen has made it pretty clear he isn’t a fan of how the story was handled. He has criticized the film and questioned how closely it sticks to what actually happened.

Audiences were curious anyway.

The Heart of the Beast brings Brad Pitt to No. 3

Brad Pitt has a new movie in the box office race too.

The Heart of the Beast brought in an estimated $7.45 million Friday from 3,435 locations and should finish the weekend somewhere around $20 million.

Pitt plays a retired veteran who survives a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his combat dog That’s really where the story begins. After making it through the crash, the two still have a 58-mile trek ahead of them if they want to reach safety.

Resident Evil hangs around at No. 4

Last weekend’s No. 1 movie isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Resident Evil dropped to fourth place with $6.9 million Friday from 3,684 theaters. It’s expected to add another $23.5 million over the weekend after scoring a franchise-best opening.

Austin Abrams plays a medical courier making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital when, naturally, everything goes horribly wrong. A zombie outbreak turns the trip into a fight to stay alive.

If you’ve spent any time with Resident Evil over the years, you already know Raccoon City is probably not where you want to make your next vacation reservation.

Endgame Déjà Vu at No. 1, Forgotten Island lands at No. 5

Forgotten Island rounds out the Top 5.

The Universal/DreamWorks Animation movie earned $4.38 million Friday from 3,548 theaters and is expected to reach about $11.5 million for the weekend.

The story follows two friends who stumble onto a portal leading to the mysterious island of Nakali, where the magical creatures they heard about growing up suddenly aren’t stories anymore.

Then comes the problem. Getting home could cost Jo and Raissa all the memories of their friendship, leaving them to find another way off the island before those memories disappear.

The voice cast includes H.E.R., Dave Franco, Lea Salonga and Jenny Slate.

So yes, plenty of new movies arrived this weekend. None of them managed to knock off a movie from 2019.

That’s Endgame Déjà Vu for you. Seven years later, Avengers: Endgame is No. 1 again.
