The Clayface Final Trailer offers a much closer look at DC Studios’ new horror thriller, with Tom Rhys Harries stepping into the title role as Matt Hagen, one of Gotham’s most unusual villains.

Directed by James Watkins, Clayface takes the cult-favorite character from Batman’s Rogues’ Gallery and pushes him into much darker territory. The new Clayface trailer leans heavily into horror, tragedy and psychological terror rather than presenting Matt as a traditional comic book villain.

Tom Rhys Harries becomes Matt Hagen

The Clayface movie follows Matt Hagen, a young man who rises from the streets of Gotham to become a Hollywood leading man.

That promising career is brutally cut short after the actions of a local crime boss leave him horribly disfigured.

With his career gone and the people around him abandoning him, Matt turns to an experimental treatment that appears to offer him an impossible second chance.

The procedure miraculously restores his appearance, seemingly giving him his former life back.

But the treatment also comes with unexpected consequences.

Matt begins losing his grip on reality, and what initially looks like a chance to rebuild his life soon sends him down a destructive path driven by revenge.

The Clayface final trailer gives audiences a stronger sense of just how far that transformation may take him.

Clayface brings horror into the DC Universe

Clayface has been portrayed in several different ways throughout DC history, but transformation, identity and the loss of control over his own body have always been central to the character.

That makes the Clayface horror movie a natural fit for a darker approach.

With James Watkins behind the camera, the DC Studios Clayface film appears ready to lean into the disturbing possibilities of Matt Hagen’s transformation.

Rather than focusing on Batman, the movie puts one of Gotham’s villains at the center of the story and explores what happens when a promising life turns into something far more frightening.

Who stars in Clayface?

Along with Tom Rhys Harries, the Clayface movie features Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.

Nancy Carroll and Joshua James also appear in the film.

Details surrounding many of their characters remain under wraps, which leaves plenty of questions about who will be part of Matt Hagen’s rise, transformation and eventual spiral.

For DC Studios, Clayface represents another chance to explore a very different side of Gotham.

The Clayface final trailer makes it clear that this is not being presented as a typical superhero movie. Instead, the film appears to be embracing body horror, psychological tension and a tragic villain origin story.

Clayface opens in theaters October 23.
