The Voice Night 2 gave the coaches another reason to start fighting early as the Season 30 Blind Auditions continued.
After Monday’s premiere introduced Queen Latifah and Riley Green to the red chairs alongside returning coaches Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine, The Voice Night 2 brought six more singers to the stage. The episode included two four-chair turns, another use of the new First-In button and one audition that ended with a major cliffhanger.
There was also one performance so strong that Adam Levine was already talking about a possible winner.
Here is how The Voice Night 2 played out.
The Voice four-chair turn starts with Koumba Diallo
It didn’t take long for The Voice Night 2 to produce another four-chair turn.
Fifteen-year-old Koumba Diallo took on “Stone Cold,” which is hardly the easiest song to bring into a Blind Audition.
All four coaches eventually wanted her.
Kelly Clarkson immediately recognized how ambitious the song choice was and later made the case that she knows how to guide young singers through the competition.
Adam Levine was impressed by how developed Koumba already is at only 15, while Queen Latifah praised the beauty of her lower register.
Riley Green went even further, calling it the strongest audition he had seen to that point.
Four coaches wanted her, but Koumba ultimately chose Kelly Clarkson.
That gave Team Kelly another young powerhouse.
The Voice Blind Auditions continue with Alt Bloom
Next came 36-year-old Alt Bloom, who performed “The Bones.”
His version earned chair turns from Queen Latifah and Riley Green.
The coaches heard both the strengths and the rough edges.
Adam Levine, who stayed facing the stage, thought Alt had an interesting sound but felt parts of the performance got away from him.
Green heard some of that struggle too, but liked the bluesy direction Alt brought to the song.
For Latifah, the differences were part of the appeal.
She liked that nobody already on her team sounded quite like him and believed she could help him figure out where his voice works best from song to song.
Alt chose Queen Latifah.
The Voice First-In button changes Johnnie Kapua’s decision
Thirty-two-year-old Johnnie Kapua performed “Die with a Smile” and caught the attention of both Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah.
It wasn’t a completely flawless audition.
Adam Levine liked Johnnie’s distinctive voice but heard enough control issues to keep him from turning.
Even Latifah, despite wanting him, acknowledged that his breath control became loose in places.
Still, she believed there was something worth developing.
Clarkson focused on the soulfulness of his voice and the unusual cadence he brought to the performance.
Then she decided she wasn’t going to risk losing him.
Before Johnnie could officially choose between the two coaches, Clarkson used her First-In button and automatically added him to Team Kelly.
As it turned out, she probably didn’t need the insurance.
Johnnie later told Carson Daly that Kelly was the coach he planned to choose anyway.
Harmony McKee surprises The Voice coaches with country
Nineteen-year-old Harmony McKee stepped onto the stage with Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead.”
That naturally sounded like a country audition.
Apparently, it wasn’t supposed to be.
Harmony revealed afterward that she doesn’t consider herself a country artist — and that this was actually the first country song she had ever performed.
That came as quite a surprise to Kelly Clarkson, who had already praised the song choice.
Adam Levine and Riley Green were the two coaches who turned.
For Levine, Harmony’s ability to tackle something outside her usual lane showed how versatile she could potentially be.
Green found a more personal connection, talking with Harmony about their grandfathers and their mutual appreciation for old blues music.
Harmony ultimately went with Riley Green.
Ethan Shobert leaves The Voice Night 2 without a chair turn
Not everyone made it through The Voice Night 2.
Nineteen-year-old Ethan Shobert performed “The Great Divide,” but none of the coaches turned their chairs.
Adam Levine still heard something in Ethan’s voice.
His advice was essentially to settle into the performance more and not let nerves get in the way of what makes the voice interesting.
Levine also encouraged him to come back and try again in the future.
For this season, though, Ethan’s journey ended at the Blind Auditions.
The Voice Night 2 cliffhanger belongs to Lexi Stephens
The final audition of the episode may have created the biggest fight of The Voice Night 2.
Twenty-three-year-old Lexi Stephens performed “Die on This Hill.”
All four chairs turned.
And this time, Adam Levine wasn’t being subtle about how badly he wanted the singer.
He called it his favorite Blind Audition so far and said he was prepared to get “scrappy” to land her.
Levine even went so far as to suggest Lexi could win The Voice.
The other coaches weren’t exactly backing away.
Queen Latifah described the performance as masterful, while Riley Green called Lexi the most talented singer to come across the stage so far.
Kelly Clarkson had a different angle for her pitch.
She reminded Lexi that she knows firsthand what it is like to stand on the other side of a singing competition because she once did it herself.
That left four coaches fighting for one artist.
But The Voice Night 2 didn’t give us the answer.
Lexi’s decision was left unresolved, turning her four-chair audition into the cliffhanger heading into the next episode.
The Voice Season 30 teams after Night 2
With Lexi’s decision still pending, Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Queen Latifah each have four singers.
Team Kelly Clarkson now includes Brianna Cameron, Hazel Gerson, Johnnie Kapua and Koumba Diallo.
Team Riley Green consists of Caroline Alexis, Ferryn and Brinkley, Harmony McKee and Joe Henley.
Team Queen Latifah features Alt Bloom, BigCountry, Marcus Ladden Jr. and Mia Knight.
Meanwhile, Team Adam Levine currently has Destinee Monroe and Owen Uffens.
Two nights into the The Voice Season 30 Blind Auditions, the new coaches are already holding their own against the veterans, the First-In button has changed another team, and one of the biggest auditions of The Voice Night 2 has left us waiting to see which coach wins the battle for Lexi Stephens.
The three-night premiere continues tomorrow night on NBC and streams on Peacock.
