It’s a case people have been talking about for nearly 30 years, and now the story of JonBenét Ramsey is returning to the screen with Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen stepping into two of the central roles.

It’s certainly a different role for McCarthy, who has spent much of her career making audiences laugh but has never been afraid to go dramatic. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and has two Emmys to her name.

Owen, an Emmy and Academy Award nominee, joins McCarthy as John Ramsey, and the series won’t be looking only at the investigation. Part of the story will deal with what happened to the Ramsey family after JonBenét’s death, when their lives suddenly became the subject of enormous media attention.
Emily Mitchell plays JonBenét, with Angus Caldwell as her brother, Burke.
There are quite a few familiar faces playing some of the people connected to the case. Garrett Hedlund is Det. Steve Thomas, Alison Pill plays Det. Linda Arndt, Shea Whigham is Alex Hunter and Clifton Collins Jr. plays Det. Tom Trujillo. Owen Teague, Jaime Ray Newman, Rory Cochrane and Chris Bauer are also in the cast.
Nearly 30 years later, the case remains unsolved
JonBenét Ramsey was six years old when she was killed in December 1996. Her body was found inside her family’s Boulder, Colorado, home the day after Christmas.
It didn’t take long for the case to become enormous news. The investigation was followed closely across the country, and so was the Ramsey family. Years passed, theories came and went, documentaries were made and books were written. The question at the center of all of it never went away.

Netflix has gone down this road before with documentary programming, but this isn’t another documentary. The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey is a scripted drama, with the series spending time on the investigation as well as the people who found themselves living through it.
Who’s making The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey?
Richard LaGravenese, whose credits include Freedom Writers and Behind the Candelabra, serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Anne Sewitsky directs and executive produces after previously working on Presumed Innocent. Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach co-wrote the series and are executive producers.
For now, Netflix is only giving us that first image of McCarthy and Owen as Patsy and John Ramsey. We’ll see a lot more when the series arrives later this year.
