In case you missed this, the final trailer for Digger has arrived, and somehow, Tom Cruise has people asking a question nobody seemed to expect.

Is this secretly a musical?

According to Variety, that theory started picking up steam online after fans began studying the new trailer and noticing a few unusual moments. Cruise, who looks nearly unrecognizable in makeup and prosthetics, appears in one shot on what some viewers thought looked like a rotating stage platform. In other moments, background actors looked like they might be singing.

That was enough for the internet to do what the internet does.

Suddenly, some fans were wondering whether Digger was hiding a full musical under its strange, frantic marketing.

Apparently, that is not the case.

Variety reports that sources familiar with the production said Digger is not a movie musical, though they were amused by the online detective work.

Tom Cruise goes big

Even if Digger is not a musical, it is pretty easy to understand why people are already talking about Tom Cruise’s performance.

The official synopsis describes Cruise’s character as “the most powerful man in the world,” a man racing to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he unleashed destroys everything. That does not exactly sound like a quiet little drama.

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, and the trailer makes it clear this is not the version of Cruise audiences usually see sprinting across rooftops or hanging off airplanes.

This is a much stranger transformation.

After years of action-heavy work in the Mission: Impossible movies and Top Gun: Maverick, Digger appears to give Cruise a chance to go bigger, weirder and more theatrical. The look alone has already become part of the conversation, but the energy of the performance may be what really gets people talking once the movie arrives.

There is also the filmmaker behind it.

Digger comes from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which immediately makes the project more interesting. Iñárritu is not exactly known for small swings, and pairing him with Cruise in a dark, bizarre, high-pressure story feels like the kind of combination that could either completely surprise people or divide them.

Maybe both.

A major cast joins the mystery around Digger

Cruise is not alone here either.

The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons, giving Digger one of the more interesting ensembles of the fall movie season.

That makes the musical rumor even funnier. With a cast like that, fans were apparently ready to believe almost anything was possible.

For now, though, the answer seems clear. Digger is not secretly a musical.

But it is still shaping up to be one of the stranger and more talked-about Tom Cruise movies in years.

And honestly, after the trailer, that might be enough.

Digger opens in theaters and IMAX on October 2.
