For longtime NCIS fans, seeing Mark Harmon connected to Gibbs again still carries some weight.

That is part of what makes Season 3 of NCIS: Origins so interesting. Harmon is returning as the franchise heads back to Camp Pendleton. The prequel continues exploring the early years that shaped Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Those experiences eventually helped turn Gibbs into the agent audiences came to know so well.

After more than two decades of NCIS history, Harmon’s involvement adds something special. It gives the younger Gibbs story a direct connection to the actor who made the character iconic.

Season 3 premieres this fall. The new trailer also suggests there is plenty waiting for the team when the series returns.

Mark Harmon gives NCIS: Origins a connection to the original

Harmon spent years at the center of NCIS, so his presence around NCIS: Origins immediately gives the prequel an extra layer for longtime viewers.

The series is not simply trying to recreate the show fans already know. It is going backward and showing how some of those familiar qualities were formed in the first place.

That includes Gibbs’ early career as a special agent and the people who helped shape him along the way.

At the center of that story is Mike Franks and the NCIS Camp Pendleton team, a group facing cases, danger and the kind of personal moments that can stay with someone long after an investigation is over.

For viewers who already know where Gibbs eventually ends up, watching those early experiences play out can make even smaller moments feel important.

Season 3 raises the stakes for the Camp Pendleton team

The new season once again puts the Camp Pendleton group in situations where the job and their personal lives are difficult to separate.

That has always been an important part of the larger NCIS formula. The cases matter, but so do the relationships between the people solving them.

NCIS: Origins gets to explore that idea before Gibbs became the seasoned leader fans first met on the original series.

Season 3 promises new threats, bigger stakes and more of the defining experiences that shaped both the team and the people they would eventually become.

And one thing appears to remain constant: when trouble arrives, this group looks out for each other.

That loyalty is especially important in a show built around Gibbs’ younger years. Fans already know how seriously he eventually takes trust, loyalty and protecting his team. NCIS: Origins gets to show where some of those instincts came from.

Why Mark Harmon’s return makes Season 3 more exciting

There is also something satisfying about Harmon continuing to be part of this chapter of the franchise.

For years, Gibbs was one of the faces most closely associated with NCIS. Bringing Harmon back for another season gives NCIS: Origins a bridge between two different eras without preventing the prequel from building its own identity.

That is a difficult balance for any franchise.

Newer viewers can follow the younger Gibbs story on its own, while longtime fans have years of history sitting in the background.

And with Season 3 digging even further into the moments that helped define him, Harmon’s connection to the series makes that history feel a little closer.
