The Jake Gyllenhaal lead role in Remain sends the actor to a quiet coastal town where romance quickly becomes tangled up with something much more dangerous. The new romance thriller brings Gyllenhaal together with Phoebe Dynevor, but the pairing behind the camera may be just as interesting. Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan have joined forces for a story that mixes a love connection with the kind of mystery that could make trusting anyone difficult.
Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, an architect who arrives in town because he has a job to finish. Keeping to himself seems to suit Tate just fine at first. Then he meets a young woman who catches him completely off guard.
Suddenly, work is not the only thing keeping him there.
Jake Gyllenhaal leads Remain into dangerous territory
Tate is described as reclusive, so romance does not appear to be anywhere near the top of his plans when Remain begins.
That changes after he meets the woman played by Phoebe Dynevor.
Whatever develops between them starts pulling Tate out of the shell he has built around himself. Unfortunately, it also draws him much closer to a deadly mystery surrounding the town.
That is where the Remain romance thriller starts separating itself from a more traditional love story.
Tate may be falling for someone, but there are plenty of reasons for him to start asking questions. What exactly is happening in this town? How much does the woman he meets know about it? And how closely is their relationship connected to everything going wrong around them?
Those answers are being saved for the movie.
M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks make an unexpected team
The collaboration behind Remain is one of the biggest reasons the movie immediately stands out.
Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan have spent their careers telling very different kinds of stories. Sparks is closely associated with emotional romances and complicated relationships, while Shyamalan tends to put characters into situations where audiences know something is wrong before they know exactly what it is.
Remain gives both storytellers room to bring those instincts together.
Sparks and Shyamalan developed the story, while Shyamalan wrote the screenplay and directs the movie.
That combination means Tate’s relationship does not have to exist separately from the mystery. The romance can pull him deeper into the story while the danger around him makes that relationship increasingly difficult to understand.
With Shyamalan involved, assuming everything is exactly what it appears to be may not be the safest bet.
Jake Gyllenhaal leads Remain alongside a familiar cast
Along with Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, Remain stars Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders.
There is still plenty about the movie being kept under wraps. For now, audiences know Tate comes to town to work, finds an unexpected connection and winds up much closer to danger than he ever planned.
The Remain trailer offers the first chance to see how that unusual mixture of romance and mystery comes together.
