Anne Hathaway has had quite a summer. She already had The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey arrive, and now she’s back again with The End of Oak Street. Three movies coming so close together is impressive on its own, but what really stands out is how different this latest one is from the other two.For starters, Anne Hathaway is back in science fiction. And it’s been a while.

Anne Hathaway is back in the sci-fi world

The last time audiences saw Hathaway in a major science-fiction movie was Interstellar in 2014. More than a decade later, The End of Oak Street brings her back to the genre, but this isn’t some attempt to revisit what she’s already done.

This movie gave her something new to play with. The End of Oak Street was written directly for the screen by writer-director David Robert Mitchell. There wasn’t a novel for Hathaway to go back and study, and there wasn’t an earlier version of the character sitting in the back of everyone’s mind. That was part of what caught her attention.

Anne Hathaway likes that nobody knows what comes next

Look at the other two movies Hathaway has been part of this summer and the difference becomes pretty obvious.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 takes her back to a world moviegoers already know. The Odyssey comes from a story that’s been around for centuries.

Then you have The End of Oak Street.

Nobody walks into the theater knowing where this one is supposed to go. There isn’t a book sitting at home that tells you what’s coming, and there aren’t years of fan theories telling the movie what it has to be.

Sometimes that’s half the fun.

And Anne Hathaway is a big fan of that originality. She also liked the action in the film, giving her another reason to want to jump into Mitchell’s story.

Something different was part of the appeal

There’s no shortage of sequels, adaptations and familiar franchises in theaters. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with them — Hathaway is starring in a couple herself — but an original movie comes with a different kind of excitement.

You get to figure it out as it happens.

That’s what The End of Oak Street offered Hathaway. She wasn’t returning to one of her old characters or stepping into a story people had already been reading for generations. She was starting fresh.

After the run she’s had lately, that’s also what makes these three movies kind of fun to put next to each other. They really don’t look much alike.

Why Anne Hathaway is excited about Oak Street

Hathaway can go from The Devil Wears Prada 2 to something as enormous as The Odyssey and then turn around and make an original science-fiction movie.

That’s a pretty interesting stretch.

And with The End of Oak Street, she thinks audiences may enjoy the same things that appealed to her: the action, the originality and not knowing exactly where the story is going to take them.

Before the movie opened, Anne Hathaway explained what she liked about The End of Oak Street and why getting to work with a story created directly for the screen felt different.
