Returning to Spider-Man after No Way Home meant something unusual for Zendaya. She’s grown alongside MJ for nearly a decade, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day hands her a version of the character she’d never played before.
This is Tom Holland‘s fourth solo run at Peter Parker. Homecoming in 2017, then Far From Home, then No Way Home. Zendaya has been there for all of it, giving Peter’s relationship with MJ its humor and its honesty. Coming back to Spider-Man asked something different of her this time.
That relationship no longer exists the way audiences remember, so returning to the Spider-Man franchise meant starting somewhere unfamiliar.
MJ Doesn’t Remember Him
Peter closed No Way Home by letting the world forget he existed, convinced it was the only way to keep the people he loved safe.
MJ and Ned lost every memory of him. Peter kept all of them. He looks at her and sees their whole history. She looks at him and sees a stranger.
Brand New Day opens with Peter working full time in a New York where nobody knows his name, watching his former friends move on without him. That pressure feeds into a change in Peter he may not be able to control.
Zendaya returning to Spider-Man is what keeps the sacrifice on screen. MJ doesn’t remember the romance. The audience does. Every exchange between them carries a weight only one character can feel.
She Was Never Just The Girlfriend
MJ arrived as a guarded, watchful classmate with a dry delivery. She became Peter’s closest confidante and an active participant in a genuinely dangerous life.
Zendaya made that progression land. Her chemistry with Holland has always driven these films, but MJ works because she was never waiting to be rescued or defined by who she was dating. She questions Peter, pushes back on his decisions and clocks it immediately when he’s hiding something.
Which is what makes her role here interesting. Zendaya isn’t recreating the MJ people already know. She’s playing a woman whose life kept going after Peter vanished from it.
Returning To Spider-Man And Finding A Different MJ
Zendaya told us she enjoyed coming back to a character who had changed in so many ways.
That shift gave her new ground to cover while holding onto what made MJ matter in the first place. Instead of leaning on the familiarity of the romance, Brand New Day asks what’s left when the shared memories are gone.
It’s a rare thing in a long-running franchise: the chance to revisit a role without repeating it.

A Career That Keeps Widening
Zendaya started on Disney Channel. Shake It Up, 2010, kid stuff. Then Euphoria arrived on HBO and she went somewhere else entirely, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series twice for playing Rue, in 2020 and again in 2022.
Her film run has been just as varied. She made Chani the emotional and political center of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune films, carried the tangled romantic drama of Challengers, and keeps balancing enormous franchises against work that asks for something more intimate.
She’s also in Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, which opened July 17, with Chani waiting again in Dune: Part Three. Marvel, prestige TV, intimate drama, science fiction on the largest possible scale. Not many actors move between all four this comfortably.
Why MJ Still Matters To The Spider-Man Franchise
Brand New Day brings new threats and a much lonelier life for Peter, but Zendaya‘s presence makes sure the film never forgets what he gave up.
MJ isn’t just a former romance. She’s the proof of the cost.
Zendaya already took the character from sarcastic classmate to Peter’s emotional partner. Now she gets to find out who MJ is once that history has been erased.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
