James Gunn faced a monumental task in making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After all, he was trying to wrap up a three-film story arc gracefully, but he also had to keep it in canon with the other Marvel Cinematic Universe films featuring the Guardians characters. Not only that, but he also had to leave the door ajar for the possibility of the characters’ return to the MCU. And, oh yeah, there was that little matter of him being fired, then rehired, during the movie’s production process.
