By the time Lionel Richie turned 20, he was already a member of The Commodores, the R&B group that would help launch him to superstardom, though it definitely didn’t happen overnight. Katy Perry was just 16 years old when her first album was released, though fame eluded her for another seven years after that. Now, as American Idol judges, Richie and Perry are putting those early-life experiences to good use, as they try to counsel the young contestants appearing on the show.
