On Health Care, ‘New Amsterdam’ Walks A Political Tightrope

It’s no secret that, over the course of the past decade or so, the state of health care in America has become a source of major political division in the country. That fact sure doesn’t make it easy for the producers of medical-themed television shows, who find that they must not only tell good stories, but do so in ways that are able to steer clear of potentially disastrous political minefields. That’s been an especially difficult problem for New Amsterdam, which has been striving to tell topical stories about important medical issues. Tyler Labine and Janet Montgomery, two of the show’s stars, told us they’re especially proud of the show’s writers for handling those issues so adeptly — and of the network, for backing up their vision 100%. New Amsterdam airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
