How do you make a movie about current events that’s set in the 1800s? Well, when the “current” in question in electricity and the events is the race to electrify America, that’s how. That’s exactly what The Current War is about, as Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse battle for energy supremacy as America was switching from gas to electricity. The version you’ll see in theaters is a Director’s Cut, from director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. That’s pretty significant for a director making only his third film, but Benedict Cumberbatch — who plays Thomas Edison in the movie — believes the young director’s outlook was exactly what was needed to give an old story new relevance.
