Reviewers and audiences were generally not very kind to Star Trek: The Motion Picture when it was released in 1979. But how has it aged? Fans will get a chance to find out next month when the film returns to the big screen for its 40th anniversary. The movie was initially made because, in the decade following its cancellation in 1969, the Star Trek TV series had grown to near mythic proportions. Why did the series continue to live long and prosper, even after its relatively short three-season run?
